So, I always have wanted a tach, and after reading Teebags, thread of "Building a stock tach", I wanted to do it even more. So after searching the states, I finally just started checking ebay australlia periodically. I found a guy who was selling a bunch of BJ42 parts, but no tach. So I emailed him and asked if he had one by chance, turns out he did, but did not think anyone would want it. So after agreeing on a price, it was sent off, $52 AUD shipped to my door, no BS. Shipped on Thursday at my door Tuesday Morning. So after getting a copy of Teebags Template, (Thanks Teebag!!) I made the cuts in the dash. I also had to move over the existing pull switches. I took apart the gauge cluster, glove box, ash tray, and tach bezel and repainted them all to match. The wiring for the tach was really difficult for me to figure out, in hind sight it should have been much easier, I eventually took my FSM to a Toyota Dealer and had a tech look at it then explain everything to me. So tell me what you guys think!

Factory.....................

That is very cool :grinpimp:

curious as to why you didn't put it to the left of the instrument cluster like it would have been 'stock' (mirrored). there's plenty of room there and just one switch to move.

looks good, but i think the wasted real estate where the screws mount would be better off aesthetically to the left of the cluster.

was there a reason you couldn't flip the tach for the petrol? on my diesel tack it is not a problem.

American Psycho, I honestly didn't think about that until afer I had installed it, and I agree, I should have put it there. However, the lower dash pad would have been in the way, and I dont know how I would have liked repositioning the Light switch. And All the Pics i had were obviously of right hand drive cruisers, so I think I kind of had it stuck in my mind that it had to be on the right side of the gauge cluster. Would have been done easily enough though, you can flip the the bezel upside down with no problem. Maybe on the next 40 I get...

Thanks for the compliments guys!!

that's very cool i love stock anything. I didn't know that there was ever a factory tach in any 40. the things you learn reading. Nice work Pal.

Very:cool:. I love the OEM factory look.

Wow! that looks great. I am officially inspired. I salute you! *******

Good job! Even though it belongs on the other side it does look like a good factory fit right there.

oh, and stop pinching all our aussie ebay treasures! :flipoff2::lol:

Well done! Looks great.

Man that looks so natural and perfect. I already bought a complete new set of white face gauges and billet mounting plate, the whole nine yards, now all I want is the stock setup with that sweet Australian tack. Nobody needs a tach on a Cruiser that goes to 10,000 RPM. Once again, nice setup, very factory looking. -MATT

Just curious the tach is from a BJ42 which is a diesel how did you get the sensor to work on the gasser I thought the pulse sensor was different for the two.

Yes, the Tach is from a BJ42, I followed the the well thought out and executed plan of Teebag's (Mad props go to him for helping me out and being patient while I emailed him stoopid questions) in his original thread:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/227658-building-factory-tachometer-fj40.html

The tach is from an FJ60, that I got here on mud, Only 10 bucks, so I lucked out and have only put in about 60 bucks, and some time and bloddy knuckles, toward the project.

So I did not have need of the sensor, and just wired the tach as would have been normal for an FJ60. Well at least I think it is normal, the tach works, and appears to be working correctly...

I hope it's ok to bring this thread up again, as I am doing the same to mine, however you can't just flip the bezel, it's assymetrical and flipping it puts the dial face askew in the circle (I've tried...) So there's two options; put it where you have, or on the other side, with the screws still facing as you have.
Yours looks ecxellent IMOP!
