Have you driven it yet? How does it perform? We don't hear much about A442F rebuilds.
So far so good. I've simply drove it around the neighborhood. Too soon to tell but Ill come back soon and give an update!

Is there a specific break in procedure for these? Would be interesting to learn about if there is one.

This is what I did:
  • 0-250mi used cheap dino rotella T5 10w-40 with lucas engine break in additive (zinc heavy)
  • 250-500mi changed oil and filter with same as above
  • 500-2000mi changed oil and filter with same as above
  • 2000-5000mi changed to Rotella T6 5w-40 dropped the lucas additive (oil has a decent zinc package)
  • 5000-10000mi changed oil and filter began regular 5k mile oil change intervals
Vary the RPM's don't take a brand new engine on a 200 mile road trip at 65mph with the cruise set.

65?! That's crawling.

I didn't say don't go over 65 I just said don't hold your RPM's at one speed. The key to breaking in an engine properly is to vary the loads and the RPM's greatly. I am also not one to denounce WOT during break in, I say go for it. Just don't bounce the thing off red line. When I broke mine in I took it up to 4,500 rpm on many occasions.

So far so good. I have around 25 miles on it and feels solid and strong. I honestly don't feel any difference in the tranny. Shifts smoothly and sounds quite. Drove the bad boy to work today.. Im happy to see her back.

Did you take it to "joe blow's" tranny shop or was it someone who has had previous experience with this transmission? $1200 parts and labor isn't too bad.

Beautiful rig btw.........

Thanks man. I took it to the same joint Land Cruisers NW uses here in Portland. They gave me the recommendation. They turn out LC tranny's regularly. I would not have taken it to a "joe blow". To be fair, they quoted 2300 for a full tear down and new gears. This was just short of new gears.

Thanks again!

This is happening now. I assume the tranny guys would be a fault here. Shouldn't be leaking from the bell housing. Bummer.

Damn. Sorry bro. That sucks.

Dam that sucks. I'd Love to know what your fuel economy is like after a full rebuild

I rebuilt my motor as well. All toyota parts, $4k... tyranny is being rebuilt as we speak. . Didn't make sense to have a " new" motor with 290k on the tranny...

The A442f transmissions regularly out live the engine. That's why tranny rebuild threads are nearly nonexistent.
