Protect the tires from what? Big nasty rocks? I like a narrow bumper that doesn't get hung up on whatever I'm trying to drive over.
Anyway, I needed a low profile winch because I still use my hand crank and didn't want to cover the hole it goes into. The harbor freight winch was cheap, on sale and fit. It works pretty well too.

I absolutely LOVE the low profile of your winch! AND, I have a Harbor Freight about 4 miles away. Exactly which winch and model did you get, and I'll go get one! Thank you!!! Please send me a PM with the info. Thank you!

Also, where can I find a hand crank?

Secretly, to make that low profile (which I love), I located the control box in the engine bay (which I do not love but can live with). I mounted it just behind the passenger side headlight.
It's a badlands apex 12000#.

THAT is brilliant!!! Having never had a winch before, I didn't know you could do that, but now that you told me, I'm going to do the exact same thing!

Thank you!!!

You're far too kind. It's not my idea, been done before, the included directions tell you how to do it.
Do not do the exact same thing. We do not have the exact same vehicles or the exact same bumpers or the exact same anything. There's not a lot of spare room under your hood. Look at it and imagine a big black box hard mounted somewhere. Somewhere near the winch. You'd probably have to move something, like an overflow bottle or a horn or something more difficult to move or remove. Do some research. Dimensions are usually posted. Go to your local store and look at the winch. Take a tape measure. Then look at your rig some more, visualize putting them together.

Will do. Cruisermatt let me know that my year did not come with a radiator overflow and shouldn't need one added, so that might be a good spot for it. And since I removed the gigantic cattle guard front bumper, I'm going to put CCOT's HFS front winch bumper on it. Paint & body shop says it should be done in about a week. Then time for the drivetrain.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I think you DO need a radiator overflow collection bottle.
Now, back in the day, when our rigs were new, every gas station had running water and compressed air at every pump. Sometimes they would even add water to your radiator. And wash your windshield. And check your oil. And we all had a Desert Water Bag that hung in front of the radiator so we could add water as needed.
Alas, those days are gone. Now we use expensive coolant that I can't afford to keep adding to the radiator. Your coolant collection bottle keeps you from losing coolant and keeps your system full. The stock, clear plastic, reservoir lets you assess your coolant level just by looking. I had to remove my stock bottle, replaced it with a hot-rod racer type that doesn't work worth a darn which I gotta fix.

Because of my big GM rear heater, I have about 4 gallons of coolant. I'm sure that will go up some when I put in the new brass 4 core radiator. Anyway in the past, a full cold system will push out a lot due to expansion as it heats up. With an overflow tank connected and a good radiator cap the works to pull the fluid back in when it cools back down.

Good to know. Thank you. I will find a good spot to mount it, and a good spot to mount a reservoir. Cruisermatt also told me about dual radiator / windshield fluid reservoir tanks that can be mounted and available space that serve a dual purpose and work really well. That maybe when I do.

That HFS bumper has options for mounting provisions for different types of winches. The low profile winches typically mount differently than an 8274 so make sure when you buy the bumper it matches the style of winch you plan to mount.

I've not used it yet, but after many years of lesser winches... 8274. For a couple extra bucks I've replaced the older 5/16" cable with a never used length of 3/8" cable.

I've done some searching, and still have not found where to get one. Can you point me in the right direction?
You tried the dealer? And the classifieds?
If I wanted new I might ask ToyotaMatt or City Racer, sometimes they get stuff. Or one of those overseas parts sites that I've never tried.
If used will do, I'd think Mark A. Might have one. And look in junkyards.

I don't think it would be all that hard to fabricate a hand crank starter. How useful it would be on an engine without fuel injection and CD spark is debatable. Definitely you should have a one wire alternator. As kid we would "borrow" tractors by jacking a rear wheel off the ground, get it spinning and then yank it into high.

You first need to decide if you’re going to run a winch because if you do, most of them block the access to the hand crank.

Yes, I tried the dealer.
Yes, I checked the classifieds.
Yes, I tried City Racer.
NO, due to overwhelming advice in the forums here, and a plethora of negative postings, I am not interested in sending ToyotaMatt my money and then waiting for weeks or months to see is I will ever get anything in exchange for the money I paid up front.
Yes, I checked the junk yards.
I also checked TPD, CCOT, SOR, and Classic Cruisers.
