80's don't get stuck.

That's some challenging terrain. I kept thinking about the transmission getting worked. Then I noticed a slow shift. Then I noticed the "5 speed" in Julio's sig line. I think I might have 5-speed envy.

I've had my 60 with a 4-speed on some tough trails a few times now. The manual definitely requires more effort/skill. I got the hang of it, but it was kind of exhausting. Open diffs and tall gears didn't help. Anyway, I can't help but think the advantage of the manual is it can handle more abuse than the auto?

...just thinking out loud. I'm sure there's miles of rhetoric if looked. I digress. Cool vids Julio!

Holy crap I'm glad I live in a dry climate

I got my 80 stuck in the middle of a lake. It took 3 FJs on straps to get it out. How much do you spend on gear oil after trips like this? lol

A five speed is the ideal tranny when you have to cross deep rivers, they keep working even filled with water, not recommended though. And don't overheat fluid when slogging through mud. The clutch does suffer a bit , but if you do smoke it, just replace it and your good as new. They are cheaper than a auto tranny rebuild. ;)
As for recovery, you need a good 16.5K plus winch, and a solid anchor spot. Which is hard to find Sometimes. A couple of trucks tied together also work as a good anchor point. A snatch block also helps for those up to the bumper stucks.

Suprisingly, trans and diffs are pretty water tight. Just run the breathers up high in the engine bay. I usually don't have to change gear oil unless something "bad" happens.

Took our first trip to Odessa-Doran loop this weekend near Calico. Great trail! We got lucky and met the local TLCA president, Brian. He gave us a lot of local knowledge and good spotting on Pucker Pass and the Squeeze.

FZJ80 is 3x locked, 3x leaking, with 34" tires and OME lift
