Who has taken their 100 on the Rubicon?

see...here's your problem...you keep trying to inject facts and first hand knowledge into a thread loaded with fantasy by people who've never run the trail...

:flipoff2:

This is in your own signature line....

"I have more respect for people who change their views after acquiring new information than for those who cling to views they held thirty years ago. The world changes. Ideologues and zealots don't." - Michael Crichton

I have never run the Rubicon. Not in a 100 or any other vehicle. I always felt my skills and my vehicle were not ready/able to tackle it. After reading your posts/first hand knowledge, and those of others who've run it, I think that with the help of others, it's possible. Where's the fantasy in that?
I mentioned I didn't think the 100 was Rubicon material, was corrected, admitted I had no clue what I was talking about and have been convinced in the other direction by folks with first hand knowledge.....

why did you assume I was referring to you?

I don't know you.

I only talk sh!t about people I've either met personally or have spent many hours having pointless interactions with on the interweb. I hate to be so blunt, but honestly, your previous comments barely registered a blip on my radar.
:meh:

There's lots of people who are clueless on the web...many in this forum. I don't necessarily think you're one of them...unless or until you prove me wrong, I'll give you the benefit of doubt.

Damn, he is talking about me then. :flipoff2:

How you been Doug

It's nice having the trail a couple of hours from my front door. :grinpimp:

This thread seems to suggest the 4 runner would be better on the rubicon than a 100. Why?
What mods need to be done to run it safely?

depends.
what model year/generation 4-Runner?
I've seen many 4-Runners on many trails... :D

It was mentioned that a 2010 trail edition did the rubicon trail with minimal damage so I was curious about that comparison. i passed on the trail edition 4 runner for an lx 470. I always thought of the land cruiser as one of the best offroad.

5 - Size

I can build a 4 runner up with off the shelf parts; lockers, gears, dual t-case, sliders, bumpers, internal roll cage. And it will cost less than the initial investment in a 100. The 4 runner is narrower, and shorter than a 100, but longer than a 40, both of which are assets on different sections of the trail.

Used to be, then they got fat & cushy.

I think my 100 is one hell of an off road machine. It is not well suited to the Rubicon, but shines on many other trails. Other than the front differential problem it has been the best stock Land Cruiser of the three I currently own. In terms of overall utility it far outshines the stock 1970 FJ40 I had in 1974.

It is not well suited to the Rubicon

Right. Why not? Could it be because a 100 is too fat and heavy? We used to say the same thing about 80s on the Rubicon. Nowadays, 80s are almost routine on the Rubicon, but I have never seen an 80 make it through with it's fender flares intact.
Sure, 100s can wheel, Toyota is not stupid (if you don't count the FJC) and usually improves drivetrains with every model.
All lC wagons are more utile than an FJ40, that goes without saying.

I don't think any of us on the 2008 trip had an issue with fender flares. I had the Lexus with all the cladding. I can see how easy it would be to rip them off though

My personal opinion is that none of the wagons are good choices for the Rubicon.

I know you are going to tell me the wagons can do the trail and haul more crap. True, but you cannot tell me a wagon is as nimble and fun to drive on the Rubicon. In a 40 it's not "Which line can I make" it's "Which line looks like more fun".

Any vehicle you have the privilege to take is the best vehicle. I long for the day I can make that trip, in my 100 or otherwise. Jealous!

Wow, I'm gone for a couple of years and come back to see Shotts spouting all the same crap as if I had never left. Did he really quit the forum? Sweet Jesus I hope so...

Sorry for the non-content... Um...let's see...from post #5, I was there when Amando did it, seems like he was the first and still the last? It's been seven years, I've had two kids in that time, what have you guys been doing? :D

talking about whether or not to push/pull a 100 across the rubicon...

:D

Toyota took a 100 through the Rubicon once that I know of, with some FJ Cruisers when newly debuted.. The vehicle is huge, and not well suited to the task. Trails like the Rubicon are more suited for a 40, or not much larger than a 40. You could do it, but I only suggest it if you aren't worried about damage to the body.

I have only cursory read this thread and may have overlooked it somewhere... but I remember someone recording a ton of video of a 100 tearing it up through the the Rubicon.???
