Based upon what you saw (knowing you didn't get the whole way) what are the truck requirements for the road / water crossings, etc. In other words, could a stocker pull it off (no lift, radials, open diffs, etc.)?

Andy the part that I rode across you would only need 2wd to get to the river crossing..... the river was about 24" deep so you would be fine, but depending on the weather conditions i.e. lots of rain I imagine it could get rather nasty. The river itself has a VERY swift current, much more so than any of the rivers in Tellico. I imagine after a hard rain it would really be raging. So I think you would be fine in a stock cruiser, unless we had bad weather.

Also, I am quite sure the remaining 2 miles is crush and run to the park boundry....... what happens at the park boundry is the big question. The road could be blocked there or it could continue into the gameland. I have a feeling it does continue, because there is no hunting in the state park, the Auger hole road is just there for access to the hunting lands on the otherside, which leads me to believe that the road would have to continue for hunters to exit the park and get futher into the gamelands.............. guess we need to get in there and find out :D

Andy I will give you a call this evening after the talk to the guy with Toyota about this weekend.

Contact numbers?

I'm off tomorrow due to skunk attack at the office.
I'll try to make some calls about the license. It seems...
seems....like , Andy's license is all that's required.
Ignorance is no excuse to a Game Warden. $$$$$

This place will be GREAT. The pig trail to the right
just before the "T" in MG leads to Auger Hole.
I spoke with a local Wildlife agent who confirmed.
This could make for a great spring time trip when
both areas are open. Looks like something ALL could
do as a camping trip.
Damn, JP...you DA Man!
Keep us posted!

The skinny

WE are ON!!!!!!!!!!!
We need ONE member who has a N.C. hunting permit
to go to the Ranger station on #64 in Sapphire to get a key.
They MUST go on a weekday. They can KEEP the key until
Turkey season expires in May. :) They are closed on weekends
so you can't pick up a key then.
As long as one member with license GETS the key they
don't care HOW MANY go along. No license required to
travel in there, just to get key to enter.
I believe S.C. has erected a locked gate at the junction
of Auger Hole and Muster Grounds.
I'll work on THAT after we see what is what as far as
getting to the junction.
For now, the END of Feb is the closing date in N.C.
Reopens in spring just like MG and HP.
So, in summary, WE can ALL go in and be LEGAL.

Who is going to get the key?
Oh...Andy......please,please,please

it is a done deal............ I am picking up the key today, it is the last one they had!!!!!!!! talk about luck :D

everyone needs to applaud ANDY on this one, he got us the hook up.

edit: you can only use Auger hole road if you have a valid North Carolina hunting License, if we use Andys key and get caught in there without hunting licenses....... Andy will lose his access for LIFE, so we need to look into this a little more, first. Don't want to get Andy in any trouble. I just intend to buy a north carolina license if the trails turn out to be worth it.

I don't know for sure Andy will be able to tell us but if NC is like VA at all then to buy a license you will need to take a hunters safety course. Which would be 1 or 2 days long and cost some $.

It's 125 for out of state hunting license.

It's 30 for a fishing license. Is that a possibility? Are there any places to fish in this area. Maybe we could just use fishing licenses?

I'll pay 125 to wheel legally any day.

My understanding is just ONE needs the license in the group that enters.
But, someone MUST have a NC license with each group who enter.
I was told that this morning. In response to THAT specific question.
This must be cleared up. I'll not go in if it's a violation or cause
Andy a problem. PERIOD. I was told no limit on numbers who could
go in with one license in the crowd.
I was VERY clear that WE WOULD NOT RISK ANY VIOLATION and
wished to comply with any and all regulations.
I was assured that by having licensed member present there was no problem.
I even mentioned Toyota might want to take pictures and how we
had to be absolutely sure it was OK.
LOL...guess I'll have to ask for the specific statute/regulation and
see for myself. Better safe than sorry till additional confirmation.
Stay tuned. :)
Good Job Sir Andy!
He jumped on it like a chicken on a June bug.
This has sooooo much potential.

I'm game

$125 is a steal. I'll check getting mine pronto.

Hey JP I'll burn you a copy of my Hunting TOPO sofware I have for my lowrance. You can use it on any computer as well. It should have all these roads and probably more. Call me when you get a chance and let me know what your plans for the weekend are. This is right next to Jocassee. So it's not that far away from me. I might be up for a morning or afternoon excursion in there.

Also it looks like it will also cross the horsepasture river also. So there are two river crossings on this trail! Right up Toyotas FJcruisers alley.

What's up guys, Mud was down for me early am (I couldn't get on at all) and then I was out in meetings under the guise of work to try to pay for this nasty cruiser habit... :D

With JP's two wheeled scouting earlier this week and my NC hunting license, we've got access. I copied and faxed my NC Driver's License and Hunting License to the Sapphire Ranger Station this morning and JP is taking the initiative to go pick up the key as we speak. I've had a license my whole life so it just worked out - see, us NC guys aren't all that bad... :grinpimp:

I do plan on using the key to hunt turkey in April and May (already lined up a hunt with some buddies - come join us!!) and depending how the game lands look, may go get some squirrel, rabbit, quail and grouse for Marshall's smoker before the end of Feb!

A couple of things:

Thanks for the respect, concern and helping me stay out of trouble (I need all the help I can get)!!! :D We need to figure out a few of the finer points since there is some conflicting info with respect to who can go and what's required. I had to sign and fax back a waiver form / key agreement that was very specific on a few points. Maybe I can get together with David (since he's the attorney and is most capable to interpret legal jargon, contracts, etc.) and we'll get it worked out. PM me anytime David and JP, Marshall, Alex and Alan all have my number.

The one issue that is crystal clear is that this place is ONLY open during hunting season. No ambiguity there.

Hold tight on the out of state license issue. Richard is right; NC requires hunter safety or proof of a license in another state. Also, this area requires additions to a simple license since it's on gamelands, so as a result, you also need a gameland permit. I've had out of state buddies come in for a hunt and get busted because the store that sold them the license didn't know to tell them they needed the gameland permit, too. Like David said, $$$ and game wardens are pretty uncaring folk that don't listen to excuses. Guns and vehicles confiscated and impounded, walking home.

My point is that hopefully none of you guys will have to buy anything but if that turns out to be the case, let me know if you want help making sure you're getting the right license / permit combo...

OK, novel over. Should be fun!!! :grinpimp:

Hunter's ettiquette

I wish I was up there to make this trip with you guys. It sounds like a fun time.

Let me put my hunter's cap on for a moment:

Be aware that you are in an area that is designated for and opened for the activity of hunting. Many hunters are still hunters. Which means, they sit still and wait for the game to approach. This some times takes hours and sometimes the game never shows up at all. Although you guys will be on the trails, be aware that there may be hunters or game anywhere in your vicinity at any time. There may be hunters that may have been in position and still hunting long before your arrival. Loud chatter and numerous vehicles attempting obstacles is not necessarily part of the hunting experience. Please be aware of this while you are in there so as not to disturb any hunters. I have had this happen to me several times.

OK, hunter's cap back off....

Be careful, be courteous, be quiet, and have a fun and safe trip. Blaze orange vests are a good idea, even if not required.

All good advice, Capt.

As I told JP, this road is on Gamelands and hunters are required to wear it by law for a reason. We should follow suit. ;)

A $2 hat at Walmart or the like is cheap insurance against a freak accident.

Definitely agree on the courtesy thing to other hunters as well. Nothing's worse than spending 4-5 hours (or more) sitting perfectly still and quiet to have some inconsiderate yahoos come blazing through.

Kudos on the sound advice!
