This place sounds awesome! Jim, when's your next party? :grinpimp:

The Christmas holidays are a possibilty. Still unsure if/when we will be up there. I will definately be up sometime in January, hopefully for another snow run like this past January.

I will keep you all posted.

Sounds like good times up there Capt. I'd like to try and drive my pig up there if I could ever get it running right again. Are you going to the MLK run in Jan?

More than welcome once I get up there, Rich. The MLK run is the same weekend of the FLCA annual meet, which I most likely will be at, unless, of course, there is snow in the Upstate.:grinpimp:

Oh Boy! There was sleet saturday morning. I hope the gang
is warm at Uwharrie. I sure hope we have "good" weather
between now and the new year. :grinpimp:

yeah I know this is an old thread put I have been looking at USGS maps for jeep trails in general in NE georgia, and the upstate.......... I remembered this thread and was interested to see if the trails from white water to Rosman showed up on the older USGS maps I have.

After doing some looking I have what I believe to be the general/most likey path and it appears through a little googling that the nothern part of the trail is still open seasonally.....

found this: Auger Hole Road on the east side of the park off Frozen Creek Road (NC 1139). . Auger Hole Road is open for licensed 4-wheel drive vehicles to access to WRC game lands during hunting season. Equestrians and mountain bike riders can use Auger Hole Road up to the park boundary at Turkeypen Gap.....

also: Currently Gorges State Park is maintaining six miles of the Auger Hole Road and river crossings at Frozen Creek, Toxaway River and Bearwallow Creek

If I could post the USGS maps it might make more sense........ but Auger road to Frozen creek road takes you into to Rosman

anyways I think hunting season is over for now but next fall I say we check this out couldn't be more than an hours drive.

Auger Hole!

Holy Cow.....that's a flash from the past! We used to wheel there. It's
near the Christian camp thing. We would go in near Rosman N.C.
It was closed and blocked several years ago. Glad it's now open!
Cool old logging roads. Auger Hole itself was a bottomless mud pit.
It could swallow a truck whole!

I am glad that someone found this info! This was my main reason for posting this thread. Sign me up when we get to go. I would love to see some of the areas my dad went wheeling in!!

Do any of those pics remind you of anything Gundy?

Auger Hole GPS #'s:

Auger Hole
NC: Trail Head: N 35°6.373', W 82°52.941' Trail End: N 35°4.21', W 82°55.247'
Delorme NC Atlas & Gazeteer pg: 70, D-4

So david it was some pretty good stuff down in there??? and you were right it was closed from sometime in the 80's until the late 90's and from the info I found from the Park service they want to close it again :Crybaby:.........

also it is only open during hunting season, which I believe is already over; but it is open to mountain bikers and hikers year round I believe, so here in the next few weekends if I can get some one to go mountain biking with me I will be up checking it out take some pics and see if any of the spots match up with matts pics :D

but like I said my gut feeling is this is the trail matts dad was running....... the USGS shows no other trails in the area.

and thanks for the GPS coordinates there Andy!!

No problem JP! I explored that area in detail for a few years while I was at Wake. That was a while ago however...

I actually came home from Tellico the scenic way - Murphy to Frankin and then curvy and SLOW 64 through Highlands, Cashiers, Sapphire, Lake Toxaway, Rosman, Brevard, H'ville to 26.

Saw 2 groups of Jeepers in Cashiers and Rosman that were muddy and wet. There are lots of back roads to explore both north and south of 64 between Franklin and H'ville in the Pisgah National Forest and some of that terrain is unbelievable rugged.

Maybe another expedition trip destination later in the year??

well, me and my roomate (brian) are going to go up there Sat. 28 and check it out.............. and yeah andy you are right there are tons of places to explore in that area for trails, anytime you want to do some scouting let me know!!!!

also I found a bunch of trails in NE Ga. they even show up as "4wd" roads on mapquest.......... I plan to look into them in the next few weeks. Most of the trails run down to the Chattooga river, could be some cool stuff......... these old USGS maps show tons of trails in this area, that I am sure aren't there anymore :( there is on actually shown running right thru Alans familys property :D

Cool. Let me know. I'm always game.

I've been on a lot of those NE GA Chattooga river roads, too. Used to fish and camp there a bunch in college.

Back then, I never found anything more than a rough forest service road and really didn't even need 4wd for most of it. I am sure I didn't explore everything though and it's been a long time so things may have changed.

20 + years ago

The old entrance to Auger Hole I thought was above Rosman.
Wildwood Christian camp was the place nearby. Seems we turned
across a little bridge just past the camp.
That was a long time ago. I'm probably wrong.
First time in, a crowd sent us across a huge mud pit. We made it
across. Barely, but did. Waived to them and went on.
When hours later we saw a crowd there again they waived us across.
We went across and stopped at their insistance.
They said they had pulled several trucks out during the day.
They laughed that both times they sent old Gundy it came across.
Cruiser got props. Major grins for the wife and I.
Helmut, my weimarander, was a hit too. :)
When we went back some time later it was closed.
Scouting during hunting season is serious stuff. 30x30s and chit.
I'd be careful gobblin' for fun. :grinpimp:
In SC no hunting on Sunday so we always tried to scout then.
NC ? Anybody know?

No hunting in NC on Sundays either except for some military areas managed by the Federal Government. In other words, not around that part of NC...

Big game is mostly done but most small game goes until the end of February.

Also, wild turkey (spring season) is April 8 - May 6.

So, if it's open for ALL game ALL seasons, we still have time!! :D

sweet I will find out next weekend......... we may have to have some with a valid hunting liscense with us; because the info. I found said you had to present a hunting liscense at which time you would be give a key to unluck the gate...... I will stop at a ranger station and find out what I can, but you have the hunting liscense covered don't you Andy :D
