What have you done to your Land Cruiser this week?

I checked the valve adjustment on my 2F. Only 3 were off spec, two intakes were .006 and one exhaust was .016 so nothing alarming there.

Also set the ignition timing.

I still have sputtering and missing under load at high rpm.

So I got to hit a guardrail on the highway this week! Posted yesterday about getting new TRE’s installed. Good friend of mine swapped them out at his shop. Took it to another shop about 30 minutes away for the alignment. I’ve been using them for several years now on all my vehicles. 40 drove great for about 10 minutes, heard something bounce into the floor board then I totally lost steering on a 4 lane highway. Luckily traffic was light and I started to slow down as soon as I heard what could have been a bolt. Was heading for the guard rail when I decided to nail the brakes. Got it slowed some but still slammed the guard rail at probably a glancing angle. Hop out and sure enough totally separated. Call the alignment shop and they immediately start the blame game. Thank god it didn’t end worse. As far as I can tell the bumper is the only damage. Could have ended up soooo much worse.View attachment 4094517View attachment 4094518View attachment 4094519
I can assume you did not find the nut in order to fix the connection and drive it home? So it was another hour or so sitting there fuming..

Yeah, pretty much. I will say it gave me some really good time to evaluate what had happened and how blessed I was to not only evade injury but also only have to replace a cheap readily available OEM part from the whole incident. Don’t get me wrong, the first 15-20 minutes I was livid. I Was totally expecting to see a lot of damage to the body and possibly the frame. She’s sitting in the garage right now just like she was before it happened minus the bent bumper. Beyond thankful.

Great perspective on this! 🙏

Thank you sir!! I sure do appreciate that.

On a positive note, I got it all back together this evening. Took it out for a quick test drive and everything seems great. Had enough daylight left and warm temps so I decided to Fluid Film the entire underside. Will order a replacement bumper tomorrow and hopefully have it back on by Tuesday evening.

Great attitude!👍 Objects are temporary. Life...A whole different story..😎

Nice!! Is that the epowersteering.com kit? I like how it sits tucked up in there. If you hadn't zoomed in on it I may not have even noticed it.
Yes, not as straightforward as City Racers kit for the later 40s but works well.

Not to be “that guy” but this is why you do your own work, especially on something this straightforward. Also, there is only one adjustment to be made on a 40 for “alignment”.

I’m really glad you are safe, that is terrifying.

It almost certainly was your friend not completing the job by setting the cotter pins in the castle nuts. That is their function, to keep the steering steering and not crashing.

Sounds terrifying.
I can't help but be impressed though. There aren't many vehicles around that would hit the guard rail without being totally written off.
The rail almost looks like it's come out worse than the truck!

And let’s all raise a glass 🍺 to proper Caster Angle!! I have often thought this is a very important reason to “have some” (caster angle)!!!

Totally agree. It literally did nothing to it besides the front bumper. A couple of things I will add that prevented this from being much worse or damaging more. The more I think about it the more I’m realizing the stock front bumper kept it from being much worse. A shorter bumper would have allowed direct initial contact with the pass side front tire at an angle. Might have possibly rode up the guard rail without the bumper causing it to glance off. The other thing was that the tires stick out about an inch outside the tub. When the back end came around and hit the guardrail the back tire hit and kept the tub from contacting. The guardrail did actually dent the hubcap a little on the rear pass side. If the tires were inside the wheel wells I would have definitely gotten to rear quarter panel damage.

Pulled my cowl vent delete plate off, as I work through de-rusting the front end, so I share it here for your entertainment or enlightenment.
This is the worst part of the steelwork so far so I can't really complain.
It's pretty obvious why it was leaking onto my feet, and even after installing rivnuts and sealing a plate over it, I'm pretty sure it was still leaking through one of the screws from time to time.
I'm not going to embarrass myself by attempting to weld in there. Not completely decided yet, but I'm thinking some sort of GRP liner.. anyone got an innovative solution?
