When you can fix things, then fix things. Next is buy new things if you can find them. Lastly is make/adapt things.
Those brass radiator core repairs frighten me regarding lead getting almost everywhere in the shop. They are too old-school for my taste. My fix would be a new TIG-welded aluminum, or aluminum and plastic radiator.

As of a few years ago this was still available in our medium sized city. I had a Porsche 914 tank redone with a warranty, etc. and it was a very professional job. Now you can buy new ones for less than $300 so having one done makes no sense. I spent around that re-coating my old one.
Yeah, $190 from rock auto for a new tank. I just like the idea of fixing/keeping what OE.

I honestly don’t think my tank is that bad…

Mounted the refinished later FJ40 wheels to my '82. Fresh KO2s, refinished "T" center caps, new front hub sleeves, and new OEM lugs. Really happy with how to turned out.

Looking to paint the same. What did you use for painting. Tiny brush, toothpick?
I painted the black with a can of simi gloss enamel and the red is a sample of of Freeborn Red I had and put into one of those small aerosol paint jars from an auto paint store. The silver lettering was good quality paint pen from Hobby Lobby. Then a light coat of clear over the both parts.

I have been watching FB Marketplace for a while now looking for a good deal on a 40 and am blown away by the number of imports I am finding, guessing from South America. Some restored, some not, and some are easier to spot than others. When did the market get so flooded with these rigs?

If you're shopping you should look in the classified section. There's a couple of nice ones in there.

When I did my hubs I painted them and then went back with an nail file and took the paint off the the raised letters letter. Then I put on a couple of coats of clear coat.
Much easier than trying to pain the little letters

Definitely some nice rigs in there, the "one" has yet to surface. Part of the problem is I only want to pay pre-covid prices. The whole draw of the Land Cruiser for me was getting an amazing machine at one heck of a value. My first 80 came from a mud member in Utah, triple locked 96 in great condition and I think I paid $5800ish. All of the 40's I have had were sub $5k purchases as well. I know times have changed, but the prices for some of the 40's I see are pipe dreams, I am going to keep living in the past and wait for something to pop up.

IMO, If you pay $30k and she's turnkey you did good. At $20k you will need to make her roadworthy. I personally would stay away from a South American redone. God ONLY knows how it was put together.

Restoring a set of Aisin locking hubs that were in a lot of parts I bought recently. Waiting on some gaskets and small spring and bearings to arrive. Taking my WARN hub off and installing these. The main bodies are installed. Pain in ars keeping my hand steady to paint those tiny letters...

There are some deals out there, you have to be patient. I got lucky and paid $12,500 for my '77 last winter. Runs good, minimal rust. Needed some cosmetic TLC on the dash but that was about it. Drove it daily all summer.

Is that really a thing? Have you done that?

This is what I used on a couple of old Korean War Jerry cans that I picked up at the local military surplus store. Both had a lot of rust inside and one had a slow “weep” from one of the crimp welds. That was 3yrs ago and still holding strong with no signs of peeling or rust.

Gave my Dad a ride to pick up his Camry. Saw a nice Bandeirante in the showroom. Check out those banana shaped leaf spring shackles! I was in a hurry so no info on the motor, but it had a 5 speed trans. The tailgate hardware sure looks cheesy. It had signs on every corner stating,"Not for Sale, do not climb on, ask questions about, or look at too long"...Ha! Very nice! Thanks for sharing.

I'm changing the look of Olive. I have a new tub for her, but not the time for the project and spring is here! One more rusty season, but I still love driving this truck. I am switching up the look though, because I had stock grey steelies on her and the hardtop (or no top). Now going with gloss black factory steel wheels and a tan soft top. I like the new look so far. Just a few more things to do.

Sure wish I still had my dog though

Mi encanta!

This is the first failure in two years, after daily driving in Bogota! I went for my annual vehicle inspection (technomechanica), everything was going well. Then the inspector calls me over and says he can't put the truck in gear. After a visual inspection we noticed fluid on the floor. It (clutch fluid reservoir) was leaking and would not let the truck go into gear. I called my mechanic and he came over right away and fixed it on the spot. I was able to continue the inspection and passed. Gotta love Colombia.
