Took the FST off for the first time in 4 years. And first time driving around with the windshield down in Honolulu.

Saw another 40 series land cruiser in town (witch is a small island). so I promptly tracked it down to talk to the owner. It is a South American Import fj43. looked really nice next to my old 1964 fj40.

Flushed the cooling system. New heater hose connector makes a good place to hook up the garden hose too

Looks good. Did you consider adding a dedicated ground from the light housing to the frame?

I didn't. Previously I chased the electrical issues common to these lights. Ended up with a combination of wrong bulbs and ass-backwards wiring. Back then I wire wheeled the mounts and posts to ensure a good ground. I haven't had any issues. I may do that if/when I replace the wiring harness.

Spent the day refurbishing the front signal lights and installing new side mirrors. I am curious for those who have used these mirrors mounted in the hinge bolt holes. Where do you position the passenger side mirror? The driver's side was not to hard to adjust for my blind spot, but the passenger side is totally blocked by the window frame. I have tried a few different positions but none really work.

Simple question on these … assume the running light is the top lens and blinker is amber one. Was this the case on all years?

From what I read while researching my "issues" different countries run the lights differently. In the US, Top and Side are running lights, the bottom front is blinker/hazard.

After way more than a decade of dragging this thing around the country, slowly getting it fixed, painted etc I am starting to put it together. Along the way, I’ve been having these ‘oh sh1t’ moments when I realize there’s an important part that I have no idea where it went, if I ever had it or what it should look like. This was one of them - the gasket between the carb and the air filter. Didn’t seem like any of the usual vendors carried one for an earlier model (‘72). I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to cobble something together when I stumbled on the part number - and even better, the local dealer could order it. $12 and a few days later I had it.
I’m always impressed with the quality of the parts and how well they fit

For the uninitiated, here’s what a ‘72 air filter housing looks like. I figured I could tape the outside and get some rubber or foam etc, etc but the actual piece is really a quite intricate double lipped ring that fits snugly both on the inside of the filter ‘cone’ and the outside of the carb

Thanks. Mine is the opposite. Mine is also a 79’ Canadian. Not clear if it is correct or not.

FWIW, that’s how mine was when it came in from Colombia. But a previous US-spec 1975 FJ40 was opposite.

Over the years I have seen, wire nuts, scotch tape, undersized wire, twisted wire ends, romex, solid copper and yes…the dreaded tin foil..

As a young buck right out of high school, I “fixed” my girlfriend’s basket case of a pos Porche with a length of clothes hanger wire and duct tape. When it caught fire and burned to the ground a couple years later she’d already slept with a few of my friends. So, some of us know what we’re doing without knowing what we’re doing.

(No one was hurt in this exaggerated tale of yesteryear)

The last big hurdle…. Hopefully…… pulled out the old harness. It’s a dirty mess but most of the switches seem to function. Not something I’m looking forward to

I used to be a head chef in another lifetime. People would come in looking to sell them by the 5 gal bucket. I never bought them, only cause I couldn’t trust myself to get the identification right on every mushroom that would make it in the plate. Heard a story about a chef that used the wrong morels in Bozeman last summer, tragic ending. He probably thought he was doing it all right.

if you know your stuff, collect away. Just be careful.
