I spoke to the Bilstein rep today 1/29/24 and he said that in the rear, the shaft should go in the bottom position due to rocks denting the housing. In the front, orientation doesn't matter.
The weight savings alone though…Original starter was struggling……. Got impatient (sorry @ToyotaMatt was playing catch up with orders) and got a remanufactured unit fairly cheap
Thanks @Coolerman for the connection pigtail that made for a more secure hookup!
As others have voiced, it does sound….. different but I’m not too bothered by it - I’ll likely have my original rebuilt just in case

Part# FLF1P6.3W it's a 1 pin latching connector for the gear reduction starter. I got him to do a 6” 14 gauge pigtail as well…I'm due for a Coolerman order. Is there a PN for that plug? I just have a female spade connector on there now
yeah buddy!I have been slowly putting a 2f back together for my 1964 fj40 I call the salt wagon. A name given by the previous owners that I kept. the salt wagon has an sbc swap and a 3speed. I wanted to go back full Toyota so the 2f inline 6 was a must have. Its starting to look good! tore it down all the way and cleaned/repaired and started putting it back together with new gaskets vale seals and all the goodies you need. Some things here are not bolted up all the way yet like the intake and carb and the fan. The carb thats on it needs new throttle plates so its a parts carb now. All I need now is my carburetor to rebuild that is coming from Oregon. and an exhaust header coming from Tennessee. then a few little things like vacuum lines and some heater lines. Its come a long way!
When I got the engine over Christmas before I got home.

oof...I finished my exhaust system. Not able to get the truck to a shop I did it myself. "Ray's Garage" a local shop with a tubing bender and all the accessories played a major part in it. Being a retired building contractor I had lots of PVC pipe and fittings laying around. I would mock up a section with the bends I needed out of PVC and take it to Ray where he skillfully used it as a pattern to make up that section in steel tube. I'd bring that home do any welding necessary. A couple of rounds of that and the system was complete. Ray got it right the first time so no re-bends were needed. The one down side was hanging the muffler temporarily with tie wire to mock up the final section, laying underneath the wire let loose and I caught the muffler in the face. I'm now waiting for the shiner on my left eye to go away.
Bushings are in my near term bucket, eventually I'll replace the leaves, but not this year.I removed the front leaf springs last night. I'm going to prep them and add a new fresh coat of paint. New shackles, spring pins, bushings will be installed along with a set of new shocks. The bushings were basically disintegrated and most of everything was riding on metal to metal. I'm anticipating a softer, quieter ride.
