Yeah I know the top gears are the same - just curious if the lower ratios in the low gears really have it falling in its face out of red lights, Mack truck style or if is more manageable. I’m going to the H41 either way, just curious what I’m getting myself into!

I've had an H41 in a HJ45 and now have an H55F in my BJ74. They have the same 1st gear ratio, 4.843:1 compared to the 3.555:1 in the H42 or 2.757 first in the 3 speed.

I still use 1st all the time even with the turbo diesel...and yes I'm shifting usually before I get through the intersection. :D I'm running 4.11s and 255/85r16's (32.75") You can start in 2nd, but I find you do have to feather the clutch a little bit more. The only time I "start" in 2nd is if I'm rolling up to a really slow stop and don't actually stop.

I don't see ANY downside in the H41's 1st gear at all, great upgrade.

Had a great weekend in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest!

Spent 5+ hours yesterday afternoon on the 64's wiring.

It all seems so straight forward but I have a sneaky suspicion things are not as straight forward as it seems.

Does anyone know of a "definitive" 64 diagram? I have looked and found many great diagrams and pictures from all over MUD, lot's from Destins 64 build thread in the 25 section. But even then, there are differences in almost every one of the diagrams even though the report to being 64.

I am guessing that there were many subtle and not so subtle changes through those early years.

Anyhoo, my main issue has little to do with traditional wiring. I am installing a later model FJ60 55 amp alternator with internal regulator.

It bolted right in (I have already made the mod for later style alternator) and the wiring for it is SUPPOSED to be simpler.

One wire going to batt, and the other to ignition.

What side of the fuse block should I be hooking the IGN cable from the alternator to? Batt side or load side?

Maybe I will create a separate thread for this issue..

Anyways, once this wiring is done, I will take her on her maiden voyage!!!

Pulled the steering wheel and column for some maintenance a couple of days ago.
Put a new bushing on the end as the old one had quite a lot of slop.
On the other end worked on the blinker mechanism.
They now stay on with out holding the lever when going straight but very sensitive when the steering wheel is turned.
Putting it all back together broke the 48 year old plastic horn ring so had to repair that then when I did get it all back together found that I misjudged and the steering wheel was crocked so pulled the wheel and made a gueestimate and put it back.

Remodeling downstairs bathroom and hooked up the trailer to get the new shower stall today.
The steering wheel was straight.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So I loved this gentlemen’s build thread and luckily had a buddy who wanted to help me out. Replicating the tail lights. The idea are the powdercoated metal parts. Raw metal is the replication. Feel good about it.

Build thread I mentioned:

Simms has obviously been stalking me along the local rivers.

Gives me a flashback moment of a Ray Stevens song: ".....Well, how'd you get that big motorsickle up there on the high dive, Coy? Now Coy, Dad blame it, that ain't no way to act. We supposed to be pillars of the community..."

Oh, as far as my FJ40 this week, it takes me back and forth, back and forth, & back and forth to work and other places.

I just got back from vacation in Montana with my wife. I kept my eyes peeled and spotted 4 40s in varying conditions, but no green ones. We got a good amount of fishing in, caught west slope cuts and a bull trout in the Flathead and Glacier NP and browns, rainbows and Yellowstone cuts in Emigrant. :) Also saw your recommendation in another post and went to Bar 3 BBQ which was awesome!

Then I came across this stat showing Montana has the oldest average age vehicles right after we got back, something I totally believe:
  • The average age of vehicles on the road in the U.S. is 11.8 years. Montana has the oldest average, at 16.6 years. This is all according to IHS Markit, which studies this stuff.

Sounds like a great trip!!!!!!

Montana is where old cars go to die!

I think I am destined to retire in Montana. Prescott is great but getting crowded and Phoenix just wears you down with the heat!

That’s the reason when Vegas hits 100 degrees we pack up the MH and leave town until mid September or October nice to be retired

Did I ever mention how much Montana sucks?

I think it was 90 today, I saw 39 on the way to work this morning.
