Chasing down the 06/07 hot stall issue. First step replace fuel filter while waiting on replacement fuel pump. Took off what might be the original filter (157k miles) based upon PO service records. Baggie is the “filtered” fuel on the out/engine side of filter - nasty and dark. Easy swap that has to make fuel delivery better.

Because of disingenuous information here on MUD. I’ve installed the OEM clamps on every 100 axle I’ve rebuilt (n = 12 at this point, I think) and not had any issues. The MC clamps are a bandaid after 100k miles when the boots lose their suppleness and no longer seal tight to the shaft. But at that point, it’s likely that the outboard shaft splines are worn and the axle should be rebuilt with a new outer tulip, or replaced with a new axle.

Another reason people don’t use OEM could be that (like me) they stared at the OEM ones like a hog staring at a watch and had no clue how to put them on… I quickly convinced myself that they require a special tool…

Got home from work and started tearing apart the drivers side cv axle. Weekend weather is looking good so no time to waste.

Here’s a photo of where the boot ripped. I’m suspecting I tightened the clamp too much.

From start to finish, the whole job took about an hour. I decided to time myself, having done it so many times now… This time does not include the time spent SAFELY securing the vehicle on at least (2) contact points.

Disassembly of the cv axle took about 15-20 minutes. I struggled the most with cutting off the old (practically brand new) boot and wiping away the grease.

Tips for those about to take this on:

-Mark all points on the axle before taking apart.
-Jack up the driver side high enough so you don’t lose fluid from the diff.

Replacement boot will be ready for pick up from the dealer tomorrow.

Good news is you’re getting faster every time the boot rips. I say keep ripping them and go for the record . 1 hour is already impressive.

Began the long-dreaded “while I’m in there” big service (just removing stuff so far): steering rack, tie rods, water pump, thermostat, timing belt, fan shroud, and figured out why I was running a bit hot in low range. Also strange that the ps fluid supply hose was completely off… the rack was leaking badly from the boot, but this made me scratch my head.

So how hard did it steer essentially without power steering? I’m guessing the reservoir was dry as well and the pump must have been screaming. That looks really dry.

Lol thank you my guy @wrigh003 but I’ll tell you now I understand why shops ask for $$$ to get these skids installed. All I can say is good luck and godbless to the next guy who will install this!

New PS reservoir hoses and factory clamps. I continue to be amazed by how well thought-out Toyota parts are….white stripes on the 12 o’clock mark of the reservoir ends of both hoses—other colors at the other end of each. Clamps supplied in the open position with little clips on them that can just be pulled off with pliers, allowing the clips to close…
And yes I got fluid everywhere despite taking every precaution I could think of….
Also ran new wires for my fridge—turns out the 12 AWG I previously ran was not big enough to prevent voltage drop at compressor startup on our new National Luna fridge, which caused it to trigger battery protection mode when the battery was still at 12.5v or so….
Installed 8AWG—expecting that to solve this with a fair margin of error.

Haven't done much except drive her lately. My youngest daughter and I took a 2000 mile road trip to Duluth for my brothers college graduation and then on to Grand Marais, Minnesota. We took a nice hike to Devils Kettle Falls in Judge C.R. Magney State Park, but it was otherwise a lowkey family hangout trip. The LX ran great and I averaged 19.1 mpg over the coarse of the trip.

Cleaned up and got an inkling to trade 100, i know crazy

Finally installed my Asfir 3-piece skid plates. Been sitting in my garage since the black friday sale. We had decent weather and no more skiing, so had time to work on it. AHC in high was sufficient to work underneath. With the 3-piece, I had the middle plate in first, then the front and rear plates overlapped it which worked well to get the holes to align. The OEM skid is very thin.

Ceramic clear film on the windshield this weekend. Made a very noticeable difference- much more comfortable.

1.5” spacers so I can get the tires out to protect the fenders on the trail. Also new front pads.
