Started to asses the rust issues on my tailgate to see if I can tackle it myself. The previous trim piece was held in by wood screws so I'm guessing a previous owner backed into something and did a really rough repair.

Is this bondo that is chipping off?

My plan is to get this down to bare metal, treat, fill where necessary, repaint, and then cover with a new trim piece... but I'm little confused since there appears to be a thick layer of something already there.

Needless to say, this will be my first attempt at amateur body work. :)

That’s bondo, from the last guys first attempt at amateur body work. 🤣

It looks like your missing the center rear bolt on the front skid like me, your not running a diff drop huh?

Interestingly, I do have a SLEE diff drop crossmember, which is from 2017 I think, and it only has 2 holes. I thought about drilling another and adding a rivnut, but it didn't seem necessary.

Just checked records and in fact the Slee diff drop was purchased 02/2017 and is powdercoated gray, so must just be an old version without the third hole before they came out with the skids. They also recently changed the hardware in that spot from countersunk bolts to rounded bolts (you can see the conical bolt heads stick out a bit), so they're sending me the updated hardware and I'll swap it on once it arrives.

Well at least I have a low bar to clear for improvement. 😅

That's gonna be a bear to get right. There's a junkyard in Lehi (if you're in/near the valley) with a bunch of cruisers. Japanese Auto Wrecking, owner drives a 100 series so he'd know if he had a replacement.

Thanks! I’m up in PC but have heard of Japanese Auto Wrecking and it is definitely on my list to check out.

I‘m interesting to try my hand at repair first but a used tailgate is likely in my future. At this point I’m just confused at why there is so much bondo.

Some folks just don’t understand what Bondo is intended for- smoothing surface imperfections.

Successfully replaced heater Ts. My method was the lesser fun way of them driver side crumbling and yanking out chunk after chunk. Passenger somehow eventually slipped out. Previous Ts had some extra diameter on them and left the bottom hoses a little loose. Snugged up the brackets and will monitor.

Unsuccessfully replaced UBJ. Messed up the rented ball press and had to saw the whole deal out. Going in with the new one could not seat properly. Round two tomorrow.

How did you blow it and what year? 2021 build 😁
2006 LX 4 pinion, 246k miles.

I honestly could say it was the wear and tear of sub zero wheeling in the Ozarks, among other trips like it, but It happened on the way home 8 hours away on the freeway. Felt a drag briefly then BOOM. Fluid appeared new with no signs of discoloration or water.

Brsnd spankin new - nice. Was the old one not rebuildable?

Taking the opportunity to dissasemble the old one, grab a book and rebuild it with a locker and gears. Looking forward to it!

Brings a tear to my eye how clean that is... Almost like Mr. T knew you’d need it so he made that just for you in Jan.

It was hard to ignore it. Super clean. Feels like a brand new car just touching it.
