What do I have? 40 newb

FWIW, I put those in for my kids. They seem to do the job as long as they pull them tight and keep them buckled. I even use one to fasten in a convertible car seat for my 3 year old. Obviously not crash test rated, but it satisfies my wife’s concerns.
That’s what I’m hoping to do as well.

I Currently ratchet strap (1500lb rated) the car seat through its standard seat belt holder and go to the cage tie downs. It’s SOLID much more so than I can get it in any other vehicle. But I also only use the car seat for basic ice cream runs across town, not road trips.

Got a couple hours in at the shop before the family got up this morning.

Definitely not finished but at least it’s enough to put the tire back there and progress in the right direction.

Are you driving your cruiser if you’re don’t take pics at the gas pump?

Also, why as a society have we become so dependent on screens/ stimulation/ media that we have to have TVs at the fuel Pumps? Why can’t we just slow down a little. Maybe it’s just the old man get off my lawn in me.

Honestly one of my favorite things about the 40 is the fact it forces me to slow down and enjoy the little things.

TVs at the gas pump are not one of the little things I enjoy.

Me neither, I hate those things. By randomly pushing the buttons near the screen, I discovered that they have a mute button, so now that is the first thing I do when I have to use one of those pumps.

I’ve found the same on most of them. However this specific station I have not found out the sequence yet. And it’s the one with ethanol free Premium.

I dont mean to be a party pooper, but its not clear how that tire carrier swings…if it hinges/swings off the passenger side, before you get too far, make sure that tire clears the body when you open the carrier as far as you desire/need. Usually that hinge is located outboard of the tail lamp, which swings the tire away from the body enough for the carrier to fully open. With your pivot inboard, it appears that the tire will hit the rear corer well before the carrier opens to 90 degrees.

I may not be looking at the operation of your design properly, but it looks like the intent is to have two sides, each with its own pivot.

Truck is looking great. Your kid is going to be hooked on old rusty iron for life!!

Yeah I plan to check it before I go fill On build out. Currently it doesn’t open at all. I need to cut the top bar in half and add the latching system.

As a follow-on, here is one of my favorite gas pump pics: gassing up at the Needles Outpost after a week on Comb ridge/Hotel Rock trail, Dark Canyon, Beef Basin, and the Needles District of Canyonlands NP.

Edited to add: didn't mean to clutter up your build thread; feel free to delete it if you wish.

No such thing as clutter here. Great picture, and a great place to have to get fuel

Caught in a rain storm yesterday. I didn’t melt and the 40 didn’t either.

Also have managed to drive it every day this week so far. I call that a win.

Always great not to melt haha. dailying it has its ups and downs. this time of the year for me the old drums are getting a work out with all the golf carts and bicycles tourist are zipping around.

Drove it to church today with the misses and little one. Big kids were with their mom and it was below 70 degrees. Great day to enjoy the 40.

It would be really nice if I could figure out how to post pictures with words between them on my phone.

After I rehung a gutter and finished my daily house work I went to the shop while the girls napped. I spent a few hours on my tire carrier/ cooler rack and have it 90% finished.

First I cut tack welded the latch and the bumps for the upper bar latching. Then I proceeded cut the top bar in half at approximately a 45 degree angle. This seemed much easier in my head. Just throw it in the chop saw and bam. NOPE obviously to many things in the way for the chop saw. Cut off wheel to the rescue. A little flap wheel to clean it up and it was ready.

As @EWheeler suspected my tire hit the body before my swing out got to 90* so I did a couple test fits with wheel spacers and moved the post over 2”. If I ever go to 35s I’ll just have to start over. Completely. Doing this allowed me to have an idea and I was actually going to do something completely different.
I ended up angle cutting a piece and bringing the tire up 1” and out about 4”. This worked perfectly and the tire touches shortly after 90*.

This also opened up some room to put some items between the tire and body. I have an old ammo can that I think I will Mount here with recovery gear/ tools in it. However a Gerry can fits damn near perfectly. A little modification and it’ll be just right. I need to add in bracing/ side playing to the tire side which will be pretty straight forward.

I was tempted to just call it a day at this point. However I had brought one of my 12v fridges with me to mock up the cooler side. I knew I wouldn’t be able to come back and work on this project for who knows how long.

I grabbed some 2” above iron and fabbed up a quick base for the cooler. Super simple and perfect for what it needs. It just so happens that the cooler is the same width as a Gerry can so they will also fit here.

My intended use more often than not will be perfectly fine with a 25/35 qt cooler here. With a fuel/ water can next to it.

Sitting on top of 2” square tubing the base is rock solid.
Once again it goofed up originally and should have made the whole bottom tube wider. However this made a small compact package and I just don’t have time to start over. There is a small bumper near the corner that keep the base from destroying the body. I also cut the cooler base corner to add a little extra clearance. This will be filled at some point.

Overall this turned out as good as I could expect. I’m actually happy with every weld on it.
It’s a little further from the body than I originally planned, but this might be for the good in the long run.

I’m happy to be in the home stretch on this portion of the project. There is still a couple hours of finish welding, bracing,
Trying to incorporate gas struts to assist it open and further modifications. Then pull it off and tear it down off to powder coat to get a nice satin black.

Does the Weber have a choke?
What's your timing set at?
It does, manual choke. Still doesn’t idle worth a crap.

Honestly no clue on timing. It doesn’t spark knock, starts good, doesn’t diesel when you shut it off. I actually haven’t touched the ignition side of this rig other than to hook up coil power. (HEI distributor was in it when I bought it) I haven’t even changed the spark plugs that were in it from at least 2004.. (maybe I should)
