The CLR trick is great, I dreamed of doing that to an old Impala but it never panned out. You can actually do CLR them clear over it and it will seal it for much longer. I love old patina! Looking good.

what's the mix ratio on the CLR to water?

Rick I did a 1:1

We are going to likely use boiled lin seed oil to protect against further rust on the bare metal spots.... it was another tip I picked up from the rat rod websites. Could go the clear route but we don't want the glossy look

You should be able to find a clear MATTE finish at any decent paint supply - look for a Sherwin Williams Automotive finishes store and they'll sell it to you by the can. We used them all the time when I was in design school because you could get better colors and finishes for the models we built.

Linseed oil will be a constant maintenance item.

Sorry for the blurry picture. These came in today. I now have everything I need to install my front and rear long travel suspension on the FJ Cruiser.

I hear what you are saying and I know about the matte finishes as I am currently painting my 45LPB with a matte finish. I know I am splitting hairs here but to me spraying it with a clear coat isn't perserving the patina and you will be able to tell, but then as you guys know I am kinda crazy :hillbilly:

I appreciate the advice but I think we are going to give the Linseed oil a shot for now as it seems to be the prefered method in the "patina preservation circles"

It is. When I popped open the box and saw those beauties I started jumping around like a school girl...well...the :princess: argues that we all are just big kids and I kinda agree with her.

fixed it.

This week

Changed all the tranny , transfer and both diff fluids, tapped some holes in the skid plate. And inventoried the new insulation for the floor and roof install next weekend. Other than that not much.

a few weeks ago: x2 on ^^^ fluids, bled clutch

this week: lubed drive shafts...now e-brake has no tension...WTH did i break??? Wish i did this before changing tcase fluid :bang:

next week: drain tcase and fix e-brake

Uninstalled the PO "wampy weird 8 speaker upfront only system" with plenty of cut wires... And installed a new kenwood stereo, some used speakers from Gabe, and a new XM radio... I feel like a king again. Did I ever post about the hospital bed side rail I installed as a dog barrier? Ill try to post pictures someday.

Don't know if you know this but here is a tip. When luring the slip shaft. Don't use the grease gun or if you do only do half a pump. Over the years people filled that cavity and it builds up pressure pushing the slip shaft apart putting stress on the tcase, diff, and u joints. Best is to take the driveshaft off separate it and lube it that way. Just make sure you index it just like it came out. A paint pen helps with this. Also spread a little grease on the splines that are exposed or in the spline cover.

 i did use the gun and pumped...unfortunately A LOT more than that...but no fresh grease ever seeped out like all the others. I saw the split start to move and checked Mud...read some threads about putting too much in and this pressure build up while others said they look for this movement to stop pumping...to be safe I took the zerk off and drove around to spin any excess out.

I'll take it off, clean it out, and start fresh with your method. Thanks for setting me straight, I don't know much but am trying! :o

I apparently have a thing for the number 5... My wife just informed me that other than the '97 and '99 I have had a 1975, 1985 x2, 1995 and 2005 LC... Never thought of it before.

Amazing what 20 years of separation will do to change the look of a car right?

2005 & 1985

Yeah taking the zerk and driving it for a bit will usually sling enough out. Just make sure you flex it good.
