Hey, love the project, I'm looking at doing a V8 swap myself into my 91, have you done / added any heat shielding on the fire wall and transmission tunnel? I was speaking to a guy who have this combo 6.0 with 4l80e, and he did not add any insulation to both places and wishes he did, the rig does get hot.

Thanks

We added a few thick coats of LizardSkin thermal paint to the firewall & transmission tunnel. Planning to add thermal insulation on the inside of the transmission tunnel and possibly firewall down the road.

On longer drives with the 3FE, the passenger side of the center console & shifter panels would get hot to the touch. You could feel heat radiating off it from the passenger seat. While prepping the transmission tunnel for the LizarkSkin application, I noticed the outside of the transmission tunnel only had a thin coat of underbody paint. So that explains why the heat transfer into the cabin was so bad.

Replacing any worn/torn rubber gaskets/boots in that area will help as well.

Range in the morning and checking out the colors with my girls in the evening.

Trying to tie up some wiring issues, where to mock up the winch box, what “running lights” are and some other odds and ends before the big day. Also doing a giveaway for a “coveted” FJ60 part. Have a watch…

Looks like i forgot to post up the paintjob i did earlier in the year. Old paint was peeling and roof was surface corrosion and sunburn.
So while i was repairing the usual 80 series rust in the firewall, i sanded everything back and gave it a closed door spray in the backyard.

And today i fitted some new speakers to the rear doors. Due to the design of the factory ones i drew my own spacers up and 3d printed them out of petg. Original grills go over the top so nice and subtle.

Did a lot of last minute road trip prep. Hastiest ever stereo install. Ken woodhead unit pioneer speakers and $100 Amazon powered sub. Seat jackers are great for subspace. Fits great. Slap the whole thing in in a couple hours could have done better but this will have to do for the upcoming 30-hour drive.

Second row delete for that first class car seat experience. Give the dog plenty of room to lay down in the middle and keep the kiddos feet out of my back.

Picked up the world's largest bass boat sized cargo topper. Attached it with some $30 marketplace Yakima load bar beackets and plumber's pipe. All in about 400 bucks and I can store a ridiculous amount of cargo. Also added a new gmrs antenna since I broke my bull bar one off going doggy style on a hay bale. The 48 in is pretty nuts. I'm hitting repeaters two counties over with my little 15 w Midland.

Ready to hit the road.

I just installed these yesterday evening, but I only had a couple hours before hitting the road so I did it the ghetto way - laid down a thick bead of silicon caulk embedded the speaker in the ring encircled it a couple loops with electrical tape.

If I ever sell this rig the next under will curse me. I'll probably source them junkyard rear door speakers and do something better if I can't ever find the time.

This kind of counts.

FJ55 on FZJ80R Chassis.
Fuel lines, shorten tail shafts and brake lines this weekend.
Converted to a diesel long range fuel tank, now need to plumb the charcoal canister.

What did you do with your 80 this weekend: maintenance, fix, wheel, nothing, new mod??

Me:
Checked air in tires
Change oil&filter 180,000
Fill gas tank
Waiting on box of parts from Beno
Some camping. And some backpacking. Did I mention that I had the pleasure of hiking some 25 miles out from the JMT with a broken toe? Probably not. Anyway…

The scenery was incredible. I had t stop, without choice sometimes. To appreciate it.

I found a Native American arrow shop in one place. So anyway, you just never know.

People recently, “you went over McGee pass?”

OK, what wasI supposed to do? 🤣

🤣

Through Garmin, mrs surfpig is all, are you going to get a rescue? I’m like by who? 😆

Anyway it was a long maybe 25 mile not very fun three day hike out from the John Muir wilderness to the trailhead.

And that’s not even the end of the story. 🤣

The scenery, OMG.

I suppose that’s what sustained me.
