Coming home from Cruiser Fest my 97 started losing power and I exited 84 where it abruptly shut off. Coolant temp and oil pressure looked fine when I first noticed the loss of power. She was tight when I attempted to crank. Opened the hood and she was definitely hot. Let it cool down to 210 and got her started and gave it a blip and heard what I assume was rod knock. Finally got it home to Boise with the help of friends and luck finding a transporter heading to Boise. Now to decide what to do moving forward. I really don't want to LS swap as so many do. I'd like to just keep it stock and rebuild/replace the 1FZ. My truck is pretty nice for 294K miles. Head was machined in 2020 for a head gasket replacement at 280K miles. I see that short blocks are currently unavailable form Toyota. RM Garage on YouTube had rebuilt his early 1FZ and recently pulled it with around ~3000 miles on it for an LS swap and is asking $5000. He is local to me and would definitely save me time and probably some money by the time I buy all the parts and machining costs. His is an early '93 engine so I would need to pull the timing cover and oil pan to install the CKP trigger wheel and replace the pump drive gear to work in my '97.
Anyway, thoughts on this. Recommendations?
