I did a couple things this last weekend.
On Friday I picked up four Yakima 1A "Rain gutter" Towers (with locks and keys) and four 55" Yakima Round Bars - picked up from FB Marketplace for $100...so I have 4 bars to set across the top (if I want. I probably don't need that many so I'll probably offer them to any MUD members in the Portland/Vancouver area.
Went on a drive to find a specific lake in Oregon, that, when I was a kid was the place my dad took myself, brother, and mom fishing...they'd pack my brother and I into the back of the FJ40 with the dog and fishing gear, Dad and my mom in the front with the wing window's open, a can of Tab or Diet Coke in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The drive AND lake held a lot of childhood memories.
After he died in 2015, I tried to find the lake twice - I knew the general area but it wasn't on any map, not even Google (at the time). it had seemingly been lost to time. I called ranger stations in the general area and they old me that the roads leading to that lake hadn't been updated for years and "you'll definitely need an off road rig,"...It's since been updated and is a decent hiking destinaion...the first time I went looking, I didn't listen to my gut, or the ranger, and took my other vehicle and got high centered on a snow burm (in May)...the other time, a buddy who had offered to go with me had an emergency come up so we had to turn around about three miles from the lake.
In 2020, we had SIGNIFIGANT fires in the area of the lake but recently, the highway leading up to the forest road turn off was clear...so, I packed up the 80, grabbed my 73 year old mom and another couple of friends in their Rubicon, and headed out. Sadly, the forest roads leading into the area of the lake were still closed due to "too much deadfall" and no one (except me) felt comfortable going any farther.
So, instead, we drove the loop to Detroit Lake, down to Gates, OR., had lunch, and then back towards Salem, and then home. It was a good 325 mile loop, and the Cruiser didn't miss a beat. She was as smooth as smooth could be, albeit thirsty on fuel with the AC running.
Apparently, being 46 now and wearing a Toyota hat, aviator sunglasses, and sporting a beard, I look
just like my father did all those years ago...I'm just driving a different Land Cruiser.
