What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (70 Viewers)

I had a similar "is it the HG" scare on my 80 recently. I Smelled coolant a few times and noticed that the 80 was slowly loosing level in the coolant overflow bottle. Drug my feet on looking as I didn't want bad news but was glad to find that it's just the aftermarket heater control valve leaking :) I think it is a "four seasons" heater control valve purchased about 5 years and 60k miles ago. OE will go in there and should last much longer.

My 80 doesn't really have any symptoms except a little smoke on start up which I'm pretty sure is valve stem seals. I just thought the only thing near the leak area is the hg and the oil cooler. It's really hard to get to without removing the headers and now that I've ruled out hg leak I'm not going to dig much deeper.

I have a valve grind kit and I'm planning on doing hg and a bunch of other things as a PM in the near future so it wouldn't be the end of the world but I wanted to know if I needed to push up my timeline.

Made an absolute mess! Running my kerosene heater which points towards and under the 80 a few feet away.
After it runs for 15 min gas from the 80 starts pouring from a fuel line off the intake I have disconnected. Bit scary it’s been set up this way on a thermostat for a couple months. Haven’t seen any fuel on the floor before this and it hasn’t happened while I’ve been working in the garage before this either.
Good times!

Got 'em dirty: Four Peaks Road, northeast of Phoenix, up on the saddle at ~5,600 ft elevation

That's the '93 on the right, and Claudia's LX on the left. First outing with the '93 after the head gasket change, and assorted "while-we're-in-there" stuff courtesy of @richardlillard1, @twalker9480, and @inkpot; it runs really nice.

and to the west, with Four Peaks Road in the distance, leading us back toward Phoenix...

I hope you also broke it doing something bad a$$ in the mtns.
+1, was riding the XR400 in almost the exact same spot, so heck yeah! My experience so far is that if I keep getting older (and the alternative appears permanent) AND keep doing stupid stuff (which is where all the fun is) then it is likely I will keep getting hurt, but alas, that is life:)

Saw a strange leak I couldn't figure out. Assumed the worst, obviously. View attachment 3196135
So...I Did the 80 series covid test equivalent.

Whew. Passed. I'm still stumped on that leak though. Oil cooler maybe?
That's a false negative..you have covid (which is not a big frickn deal) and a blown headgasket (which is code for LS Swap) 😁😜

Was it not running smoothly before replacing them? And this repair made it run smoothly?
I thought it was running pretty well but I had started to experience some intermittent vibrations and extended cranking when starting. It would start in 3-4 cranks a couple of months ago but more recently it has been more like 8-10 with some hesitation when it final started. The terminals on my #6 connector were a bit oxidized too.

I think my newly clean terminals and fresh connectors are making sure the injectors are doing what they are supposed to when they are supposed to. Should have done it when I did the head gasket!
