I ordered all new seals I could find for the FRP top on Partsouq. Hopefully I got them all. Going to refresh all seals, bolts, and the window frames powdered - before the rain starts again.

73 FRP Top Question - I have a fiberglass windshield frame, and the surface where the top meets the frame, where the 4 bolts are, creaks as the two surfaces rub ever so slightly when I hit bumps, etc.. I’m afraid to torque the bolts too much as they feel like they’ll strip. Anyone else have this problem and solved it? Figured while I have it off I’ll figure this one out. Maybe I’m being a bit too cautious with the torque?
If you don't care about ease of removal of your top you might consider Silicone RTV mounting it in place in a semi-permanent fashion. The silicone RTV should bond/stick to the surfaces remain flexible and not rub/squeak. I would like to do this with my top, but previous owner rust/repair job has bondo'd over some of the bolts I'd need to access to remove the top. I am waiting till the old bondo job cracks up before I redo it.

I made a towing hitch cover with 3D printing. Or in fact, this is a test piece of the final version but still looks pretty nice.

Summer time removal is definitely an important factor for me. I was thinking maybe even a little lubricant, or a thin strip of rubber, might help - would have to be super thin though as I’ve noticed wind noise comes through if the bolts aren’t tight enough.

I just replaced that very front top seal last year. You shouldn't have to torque those bolts down super tight. You can loosen them, then have someone push down on the front of the top and tighten those bolts up.

If you are going to "accept movement" and the likely inherent squeaks and are thinking of some type of lubricant on the seals/surfaces to prevent the squeaking when they shift you might try this: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/ez-slide-graphite-based-coating-12-oz-aerosol
It's really useful stuff with alot of great uses. I coated all my shackles and bushings with it when I put on my new springs. I love it on the pusher grooves and fence rails on my table saw. Greatly improved the operatoin of my high lift jack. Also really helped smooth up the roll up and down of the manual windows of my landcruiser. I sprayed it in the rubber grooves the window rides in all around. Drastic reduction in friction, but don't stick your arm out the window with a clean white shirt till the excess wears off. Coated my roller fairlead bushings. I'm considering using it on my winch cable .

Goodies in the mail. :)

Interesting stuff. Might pick me up some of that for various uses you mention. I am thinking I’m gonna lay a black silicone bead there when I put it back on which should provide a small barrier, limit movement, and also peel off easily when I take it back off.

Drove around in the National Forest yesterday. There were a few interesting spots that caused me to get out and walk around to see better.
After completing at least 75% of the route, a downed tree made me backtrack. Tried to shift it by dragging but it was too bound up in other trees.

Replaced the speakers from the rear doors. Its' a narrow space in the doors. Originally I bought Alpine S65 but found that they didn't fit. Found a pair of Kenwood flush mount that worked perfectly and allowed the OEM grill screen to remain.

Old next to new and the part number on box for those curious:

Let us know if it works and gets rid of the squeaks. Looked at my top s bit today I don't think I have any rubber at all on the sides. Follow your lead if it works out.

As it turns out, removing the ashtray assembly makes a perfect spot for a small HAM radio. :)

Speaking of not smoking, I did the interior half of the install on my EGT/Boost Gauges today. Deleted the ashtray but save for a couple holes, this mod is completely deletable/moveable. Mounted into the metal support for the ash tray and had to modify the mounting bracket a lil bit on the neighbor's belt grinder. Had to cut out a bit of the bottom of the stock dash piece to fit the brass plumbing :'(. BUT I like this mounting position and have pretty good visibility from the driver's seat.

These Banks gauges run on 12v for the LED's so I tapped into the ACC wire going to the stereo. Also tried to clean up the stereo harness a bit so it looks less like the inside of Uncle Fester's underpants. Managed to break the cooling fan on my stereo though. Luckily was able to find a replacement on Newegg.

Also lost my roof rack and am selling to a member here on mud. The only damage I see on the sills is from the bolts making small circular indentations on the FRP. I should be able to patch that with some color matched epoxy and buff the whole thing out and give a serious dose of 303 protectant.

Going under the knife this week to install EGT probe, boost gauge plumbing, boost controller, new oil pressure sender, new h20 pump, low temp thermostat, and new water pump. I will take this time to also do a valve adjustment. Really looking forward to having this thing sort of baselined so I can just enjoy it. Also need to get this terrible exhaust redone. I just want to stop sending so much black smoke out before I put nice new metal in.

I'm going to install this and my Baja Designs Squadron Sports once I feel I've earned it:

Now that I got the rear bumper issue resolved. I am trying to decide on a front bumper as well.

On another note: I have been using the reflective sunshades for the front windshield and two front doors when I do drive the HZJ77 to work and they work very well keeping the heat under control in the Texas sun. My truck does not feel so damn hot when I walk back to it at 5pm to go home.

The kit I purchased has 9 pieces for all glass around the vehicle except the sunroof but I will only be using the front 3 pieces most of the time for front windshield and two front doors.

I wish they did make a panel for the sunroof so I could put one in there somehow and just leave the sliding panel closed since I never use the sunroof. Some heat does get in from there.

I guess I should update this post with some new information that I was unaware of before in case anyone else runs out to buy a set of sunshades for their HZJ77 using GRJ76 as keyword on buyee or yahoo jp auctions.

There is a difference between the HZJ77 windshield and the GRJ76 windshield.

The rest of the glass between the two is the same though.

I decided to try out a different set of sunshades (Heat protection is important to me down here in South Texas which prompted me to try out this other vendor.) that came in yesterday and found out that the windshield portion of this second set was designed to stop at the blackout areas of the GRJ76 windshield that the HZJ77 windshield does not have.

The blackout areas I am told by another mud member that I had a discussion with today is due to the airbags and/or the newer updated dash design.

The windshield portion of my first set just covers all the glass regardless if it is blacked out around the edges or not.

That being said...the rest of the second set I got is top notch and built much better IMHO. Fit the rest of my HZJ77 glass like a glove. Maybe I will make a different post to show the rest of it another day.
