Looks like an 8074 because it's missing the clutch knob.

I came across this thread while trying to date this one that is brand new in box from 1979. On FB Marketplace for $2000 CAD Log into Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/477486874096013/View attachment 2968969View attachment 2968970

Hi from NZ,
Just had this fall into my lap. Anyone help me with the age etc.

Manufactured on December 14, 1981.

Do I have an enigma here?

I just picked up this winch and it is an 8074 according to the sticker and looks to be manufactured in 1977 but it has the freespool.

The story I got from the seller is that it has been kicking around in his garage for the past 30 or 35 years. I think he said he bought it new, but I'm not sure. He also said that he had it on an F350.

Judging by the condition and story and seller, I would not think that it has been modified, but who know.

That's an 8274, based on the free-spool clutch and the brake. My guess is, some assembly worker put an old-stock and incorrect 8074 decal on an 8274.

Here is something crazy. Crazy that I even found it!
Scout Warn 8074.jpg

Here is a winch on a 1977 INTERNATIONAL SCOUT II that was made only a few days from mine according to the date code. My code is CQ7 so the 17th (Q) working day of March (C) in 1977 and the Scout is the 5th (E) working day of March (C - hard to see) in 1977. 12 working days apart. My serial number is 73,724 and the Scout serial number is 73,622, only 102 apart! The Scout winch, as expected, has no freespool.

The fact that the serial numbers and date codes of these two winches match up so perfectly makes me think it would be hard for someone at the factory to make a mistake putting on the wrong sticker.

Now, I am in Canada and perhaps there was a difference between how the Warn's were badged between us and the USA at the time. Perhaps, as has been stated above, if you went through a Jeep dealer to get your Warn winch it was branded an 8074. Perhaps in Canada the only way to get a Warn winch at the time was though a Jeep dealer and so, even though it has the freespool, it was branded an 8074. I don't know, but I have a hard time thinking it could have been a mistake. But if it is a mistake I guess my winch must be like one of those coins that the mint makes a mistake on, very rare and sought after!

considering the part number is for the 8074, it's probably more likely the freespool was added.
take the knob out and see what that hole actually looks like.

I might have to do that.

Here is an interesting advertisement showing Warn selling the 8074 and introducing the 8274. It clears up my question about why there were so many different part numbers (although mine is not in the list). Also interesting is that the 8074 looks to have a faster pull speed than the 8274. It's too bad there is no year or publication name on the ad.

Looking at the ad, my guess is the ad is from around 1975 because they don't ref anything later than 75. Plus the ad says "new model" for the 8274 which was 1st offered in 74. I think the part #'s referenced are for the specific mounting brackets that come with the winch. The ad says the winch comes with the mounting brackets for the specific application.

Good Eye!

So, looking back on this thread I found that the winch in Post 79 is also a 1977 - Dec so I've been able to book-end my serial number and it's very interesting.

8074 before, my 8274 with an 8074 sticker and an 8274 after.

Seems like all winches came off the same line.
