Are you looking for the whole assembly or a specific part?

have you taken the top cover off to see what the inside looks like?
This is kind of cheating as it is NOT the exact part, its something I found on Amazon but this is the same type of part I am looking for:

Mine is broken right where the round bushing housing attaches to the flat cap. But I can go get a picture of my winch and broken part. Instead of a pull T mine is a round black handle. For all I know this part would work. I searched for Warn Winch parts online and this was one of the matches.

you need one of these?
Amazon product ASIN B000CQI1E4is the cheap version
here is the cool one
i bent my freespool engagement knob on my 1974 8274 and since it cracked the alum i replaced it with the gigglepin setup. Also purchased some other upgrades from them at the same time to justify the across the pond shipping.

ahh, this?

Probably the correct knob, but I need the sub assembly that includes the bearing housing that bolts onto the winch housing. See my pictures in my previous posting. I will look around at the site you posted though and see if they have one. Either way, thanks!

That does look like the same thing. How long and how much does it cost to ship things from them? I gather you have ordered from them, and if you are in KC I can't be that much farther. I'm north of Omaha, Nebraska.

Yeah you need the assembly posted above. Either the giggle pin or the Warn from Montana Jack’s.
If you look around and join some warn groups and see if you can find a used one.

my 8274 had an "unplanned descent to the floor" and bent that assembly and cracked the alum. so I ordered the clutch release from gigglepin. stronger, has a fill hole. I also had an AN drain tig welded to my lower housing. I have ordered parts from Montana Jacks. I imagine 3 days shipping? they are all over amazon and ebay also.
You can go crazy and upgrade everything or you can do just the basics to get it to work. I probably went overboard..
I took my whole clutch apart and installed gigglepin clutch materials and seals. not really needed but the winch is almost as old as i am and i could sure use an overhaul.
And have ya priced a new one?
and the difference in yours and the new style, the knob.. there might be a way to utilize the old style knob if you are really concerned about looks.

For this item I'm not concerned about looks. I guess I'm kind of surprised no one US is selling something as a replacement, but the cost won't stop me.

I'll try looking. As I replied to you earlier the cost is high for what it is but not that high for an older Warn Winch on an old Cruiser. Thanks for the advice, and I'll post a quick note when I've ordered whatever I order.

Holler with questions. Many of us have rebuilt these things. I have the drum clamp from gigglepin which made rebuilding the brake a cakewalk. Just used my winch tonight to drag my old fj62 into the garage.

Thanks. I haven't found anything else wrong with the unit except for the free spool clutch***, but I probably should at least drain and refill the oil, and if I see metal in the oil I will do a complete breakdown. I have a front heater rebuild kit on its way and that was going to be my weekend project, provided the part arrive in time. Right now the Cruiser isn't a required vehicle, I can let it sit for a few weeks if necessary. I do want it drivable by snowfall however.

***is free spool clutch the right name for it?

I've seen the explanations of date of manufacture but it doesn't make sense with my label:View attachment 2774767

JV9

J = 10th letter of the alphabet, so the 10th month of the year. i.e. October

V = 22nd letter of the alphabet, so the 22nd working day of that October (not including weekends or holidays), so assuming October 1979, it would have been the 30th.

9 = the year, so the earliest it could be is 1979, but it could also be 1989. If you have the metal controller socket on the solenoid box, it is a 1979. The label looks just like my 1979 one, so I am guessing it is 1979.

There you have it - your winch appears to have been made on October 30th, 1979.

I would pull the cable off, discard, purchase 100ft of 3/8 synthetic. Split the case in half and look at the gears. Little rtv when you put the top back on. You will prob drop the motor drive gear into the bottom case when you pull the clutch handle off anyway. Try and rotate it 180 before you pull it out to not have that happen. And there is a keyway on the old motors. New motors are splines and take a newer gear. The synthetic cable is much safer to use and 100lbs lighter.

I’ll probably follow your advice and take the winch off so I can inspect the gears. After looking last night I think I’m going to go with the GigglePin assembly, but if I’m going to open the case up I may wait to order anything until I can inspect the gears and bearings. Are gaskets going to be a problem or can I just use gasket seal ? I can’t imagine any bearings either not being available or not having a workable replacement since everything is probably US imperial (inch) format. And since it’s working now I’m hoping that the gears are basically in good condition.
Thanks for your help and advice.

honestly, you wont know any of this till ya pop open the case

gigglepin is unnecessary and over priced with ship, just go OEM Warn for rebuild kit...u can match up bearing with a

SKF 6301-2RS1 Deep Groove Ball Bearings 12x37x12 mm and use any silicone that works for gear oil..

Thanks for the links. My next project has to be my front heater. After the Heater I will pull the winch and probably replace the cable as you suggested. The difference between $100 (approx) from various suppliers and $130 (approx) for Gigglepin isn't a big enough difference to stop me from buying the Gigglepin, which looks more sturdy and has good reviews.
