After reading quite a few threads on the PS topic, I have decided to go with the mini-truck PS gear box. My reasoning is this is not going to be the only 40 I own and this one will spend most of its time riding the ranch roads on our place in central texas but also occasionally taking the kids down the street to school.

If anyone has one or has a PS gear box from a 79-85 4runner let me know. All the other options I have seen have been a little pricey for this build and is not in the budget currently.

Thanks for taking a look and the advice that is to come. FYI I have been following a few folks threads on this topic and one is My Mini-truck Power Steering Install - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/my-mini-truck-power-steering-install.65318/.

My build so far.... 70 FJ40 (Here we go!) - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/70-fj40-here-we-go.1371990/.

you may need a stock steering column also.
IIRC 1970 has the shaft/column integrated into the stock steering box
there are work arounds for this but more involved

I was thinking electric PS would be good but not sure it is being done on 1 piece column and box setups

Thank you for the advice. I’ll look more into it!

You'll be looking for a 79 to 85 Toyota mini truck. Four-wheel drive solid axle. Keep in mind if you do buy one their price is hovering around $300 for a used one on line, you can put out an ad in your local area. Looking for one on Craigslist or Facebook.. also, keep in mind if you want to send it in to redhead to get it redone, it's going to be a few hundred more. Georg at valley hybrid in Stockton CA has all the mounting brackets, pulleys and other necessaries required to complete the job.

There are Chinese knock off steering boxes available. I would steer clear of those, I've heard nothing but negative reviews on them.

I don’t have one to offer, but if you decide to replace your column, I would be interested in your original steering box.

I have one from a 79 mini truck in NC, DM me if interested. Could maybe fit in flat rate box. It's heavy.

It will fit in a medium USPS flat rate box. But it needs some precautions. The pitman arm either has to be removed or just cut it off right below the output shaft. I usually use two boxes. I cut one apart. I put the flaps in the bottom to reinforce it and then I use the leftover wall to reinforce the sides. Then I put a lot of paper inside so it doesn't move. Seal up the ports in case there's any residual fluid. Tape the box up and then stretch wrap it with Saran wrap or something and then tape the entire thing.

Put it in a plastic bag that you can be sure will seal COMPLETELY! The last one I shipped I had to pick up at the local hub after part of the cardboard had evidence of leakage.

They treated it AND ME as if I had tried to ship a bomb!

Thanks for the info here. I did put out an ad today and will see what happens with that. I will be looking into Georg's stuff at valley hybrid for sure.

Once I get everything situated and figure out what I am doing I will reach out to see about sending this one to you. Not sure where your located but we can work that out once I know more.

I might have located everything I need here locally in Texas. I appreciate everyone’s help on this!

When I get to this I will let you know and give you a shout to see if you still need one.
