Thought this was pretty interesting. This guy really put some work in on his testing.

It's interesting how everything changes when he switches it up with the bfg tire.

Like anything in life there are no black and white answers. Some skinny tires might out perform some wide tires in certain scenarios and vise versa.

If I could find a skinnier tire in the 35" range for a 16" wheel that I liked I would be all for it.

I'm right there with you.

Years ago, BFG would come out to the events with new tire designs. I would find him a few people to test them in the rocks. He wasn't happy unless we beat the crap out of them.

it's not just skinny vs fat though that's an obvious point of comparison to start off with. The video is very interesting. Since I got my 80 I've only fitted 285/75-r16's after I upgraded the front brakes almost 10 yrs ago and stepped up from the original 15 inch wheels.

I've never seen any tyre flex comparisons and actually not had a flat on my 80 until the other day when the LHR one got Toyota Teq Skrewed and went flat overnight. That resulted in the flat tyre having to support a weight of over half a tonne and it flexed a lot.

I have never use BFG tyres myself. Only bridgestones and currently Cooper AT3's (which I won't get again).

I wonder if the fact his BFG’s already had some miles on them and were “broken in” had any effect on his data?
Absolutely

I'm concerned that the results were skewed because the same rim width was used with properly fitting narrow and improperly-wide tires. I'd've preferred a wider rim for the 315, for the same tread-width to wheel-width ratio.

EDIT: I mentioned this to Kai, who is always open to discussing his methods and findings (and put a ton of work into the video content!)

Interesting video. There is a reason why all major motorsports move to wider tires and the evolution through that time continues to lead to wider tires.

That said, I think the takeaway here is more about tire brand than skinny vs wide.
