Was the can this size?

Seriously though, that's scary. Not sure where to begin but I'd get that issue resolved before I spent much more time working on the truck.

Did you lay down between episodes? If so, maybe a flu bug or food poisoning?

TJK

It was only a 12 oz can unfortunately. It wasn't food poisoning b/c I was never nauseous and I never felt ill like a cold or flu. I feel better now. I've been stirring up a bunch of dust and dirt lately with all the work I've been doing so I'm going to clean out the garage well Sunday before I start working on the Pig again.

You're probably just pregnant.

TJK

Damnit! I am running behind schedule - on the Pig that is.

Speaking of the Pig - I did get the clutch slave put back together. I put a very, very light coat of oil on the inside so any rust doesn't start while the Pig is inoperable. I had two spares that I opened up and both were rusted to heck and back inside.

I also sorted out some parts that I am going to sell and sat aside some trail spares. From this rebuild 'experience' I now have a set of rear axles, thermostat, starter, distributor with wires, and alternator for trail spares. Now I need some birfs and I'll be happy.

Cleaned up some parts yesterday. Pulled the gas/vapor separator check valve thingy - air barely went away from the engine, went much easier towards the engine. From what I have read this is correct.

I removed my passenger rear quarter glass which I cracked straightening the drip rail. The gasket might (hopefully) work with the new glass so I don't have to buy new rubber.

I pulled my manifold apart and the lower half is cracked in two places and leaking . I have some pics I'll try to post tonight. Luckily I have a spare from another 76 that I'll try to salvage.

Only had a few minutes in the garage yesterday. I treated the rust that formed inside the rear passenger window weatherstripping. I opened my can of POR15 and it was hard as a rock so some cheap "rust fix" in a raddle can with primer and paint will have to do.

The weatherstripping doesn't look too great but I don't want to spend $220 on new weatherstripping right now. I did hammer out the rear quarter panel where the glass mounts on the lower side where a PO <clears throat> flopped said Piggie. It came out pretty nicely I think... I'm going to slop some window adhesive in the weatherstripping and hope it holds!

Funny story - a co-worker lives just outside my subdivision - about half a mile as the crow flies. He asked me yesterday "Were you hammering on something Sunday?" Why yes, yes I was. I tried to hammer out the very dented rear bumper where the PPO backed into something that didn't want to move. A map gas torch and a sledge hammer barely made a dent. It was loud though even with ear muffs on. My neighbors love me... :grinpimp:

Damn PO's. I found this skidplate in my garage today. I think it might be for the pig. Do you want it?

Is that a Pig skidplate? I bought one about a year ago but it is pretty flimsy. I'll measure distances between bolt holes and get those to you. If they fit and the skid is thicker than aluminum foil I'll take it. Could maybe ship Greyhound on the cheap...

I THINK I took it off the pig. I even saved the bolts - they are in that little plastic container zip tied to it.

You rock Jim.

I found 16100‑61041 2F..FJ55..USA; W/ OIL COOLER @ http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_1977_TOYOTA_LAND+CRUISER_FJ55LG-KA.14_1601.html. I also have my dealer parts guy looking up the part # you gave me. If that part # = an oil pump w/ the oil cooler but not the fan clutch and it aligns fine to the block then I should be golden.

Dang - that is twice you have saved me in this thread.

Please let us know about the water pump...

FWIW - you can gain a little clearance by moving the mounting tabs on the radiator back on the radiator, effectively moving the radiator forward in the engine compartment. I did this on my 3FE swap...

On the phone w/ Advance right now...

2 of 3 screws that held on the cap that allows access to the contacts stripped out - no big deal. I pulled out a tap which seemed to fit perfect and almost had the first hole tapped when the *&^#(@$ tap broke off. There is no way to get the broken part of the tap out so I either will have to trust two screws to keep that cap on or I will have to buy another from Advance. I would assume two screws and a little extra RTV to keep the seal good...

OK - Advance says $89.99 for a rebuilt OEM (I'm not holding my breath on the OEM) w/ a core which I have...should I go that route or should I trust two screws and some RTV?

i'm a bit late in posting, but to test a starter, lay it on the ground terminal of a battery. grab two pieces of wire with the ends stripped wedge one inside the solenoid terminal, wrap the other around the hot post on the starter. touch the other two ends to the positive on the battery. if the gear kicks out and spins, it's good. (this is for gear reduction, think it works with old school starters...wouldn't know since none of mine have the old school starters anymore).

great upgrade is the fj60 gear reduction starter. bolts right up. there's on wire you don't use from the original setup.

That aftermarket igniter your talking about is a ballast resistor. Ditch all that for the 83 igniter.
.

will the 83 igniter work? is eventhough using the original dizzy? 83 is electronic ignition and 76 is semi. i know semi won't work with mechanical. not sure about semi and electronic though

btw...times 2 on the antiseize. use it on anything aluminum (and some other things)

that looks like the splash guard under the radiator

as for the por 15 hardening, next time, before you close it up, put some saran wrap in the jar (large piece that will stick out of the jar) and press it down against the por15. be sure to press it securely all around the edges also. this will keep the air away from what's left.

Hmmm - the skid plate I had at the house matched up to bolt into the frame under the t-case/tranny area. It looked bigger than what you posted. I took pics but left the :censor: camera at home this morning. I'll look under the radiator to see where a splash guard could bolt up.

Will do and thanks for the info. I'm going to go ahead and order the water pump and I'll post up what I find when it arrives.

I have the dizzy off of the 83 too - dizzy, ignitor, side cover, so I hope everything works.

Yeah - I usually do that. I'm not sure why I didn't this past time. It was gray POR anyways. I like the black. I'm going to order some Rust Bullet but in the very small cans.

Now on to my work last night. I got about half an hour of work in. I was able to clean the garage a bit and I also tore into my oil pump. I took pics but left the camera at home. I'll try to post them up tomorrow. Everything look good enough (I think). The two gears had a little wear but they weren't too bad. The screen is dirty so I want to clean it up a bit. I was hoping it would be easy to take it off but it didn't want to budge and I didn't want to force it. The metal surface that mounts flush ontop of the two gears has a good bit of wear on it. There are several circular ridges you can easily feel. I saw a write-up somewhere around here with pics I need to find again about flipping the gear without the post and grinding the ridged surface flat...maybe it was Trollhole...

ETA: here is Trollhole's but its not the one I was thinking about. https://forum.ih8mud.com/3111035-post269.html I remember seeing one where someone ground down the rough area where the gears ate into the flush metal plate...

Thanks for all the info everyone!

Post a pic. If the ridges are to deep I'd get another pump. You can flip the gears. You cannot just grind down the ridges. It will leave room for oil to escape causing low oil pressure. A little wear is normal.

Here are some pics. The pic of the 83 ridges did not come out well. I did tear into my 76 oil pump thinking it would be in better shape bit the ridges in it were much worse and I did get a good pic of those.

cracked 76 manifold - I am trying to salvage a manifold from a donor 76 I have. Those bolts though are rusted solid!

ridges in 76 oil pump - actually got a good pic of these ridges - these are much worse than the ridges on the 83
