I would accept the possibility of a bad batch but not bad application. If you knew my buddy who did it you would know he is way skilled and doesn't screw up something as simple as liner application. He saved my paint and it looks like a $5k paint job now, it was only about a $1k paint job and like I said the clear was farked because it had been done wrong. Had I needed to paint the truck to get it looking like it does now, that would have cost me $5-10k. This dude has 20+yrs experience and went to Wyotech, chances of him screwing up Monstaliner are slim to none. Plus I saw pics of my truck while he was working on it and he did it right.

Bad batch is just as farked in my opinion. I am screwed either way, have chipping liner and am going to have to re-do it in the next year or two. That is a huge bummer for me. Will never touch Monstaliner again.

Cheers

Have you contacted @magnetman about this? I would think if there was an issue with the product there'd be more cases popping up by now.

About to take on this project. I've got an 80 series and plan on rolling the whole truck . I was wondering if 2 gallons is really enough. I don't mind spending a little more to get full coverage so my question is should I buy a extra quart kit in addition to the 2 gallon kit? I was thinking of doing the roof with the quart kit and saving the gallons for the rest of the body.

Also does the the color mix up from the different gallons/quarts pretty uniform? If I used the quart on the roof and the 2 gallons on the body would you be able to see a color difference where the two different kits meet?

Many thanks in advance for any responses.

the 2 gallons will plenty for the whole truck. but get an extra quart for touchups later. you may find some spots that need re-coating.

At least that was my experience.

First and foremost this is nothing against your friend but having a degree in paint/body, half a dozen certificates among them and having spray my fair share of bed liners I'm going to say it was the prep work. Not only do you have to use a special cleaner to make sure it adheres correctly. I know the monstaliner is different and only uses 120-180 grit to get it enough to grip. For Rhinoliners I was using 13 grit. Not enough of a bite and it chips. Also using the the wrong cleaner can also make it not adhere correctly and chip. I have read dozens of reviews on Monstaliner and not one on it chipping away. I would ask your friend some of these questions before saying it's the product. Eliminate all possibilities then if it's the product go to who you got it from and explain it all. Hell even give them your friends number and they'll talk to him. If it turned out bad product I don't see why they wouldn't refund you or give you a new batch of supplies. Just my .02!

I know the green is way off, I was thinking of mixing a gallon of black with a gallon of jungle love to try and get it close, and was hoping someone else had already tried it.

(Aus, your build thread was great, it looked like you had a really good time at Slee!)

Looked around on threads and didn't find an answer to this. I am thinking of doing almost the same thing. I was thinking of 1 gallon of jungle love to 2 quarts black to do the sides of my 80 and then do the roof with 2 quarts of white like a 40. Any opinions on those quantities? From what I have been reading that should be about right.

I'm thinking of doing this since the clear on the roof is almost completely gone and the clear on the hood and front fenders and hood has big spots missing. How noticable is the stock paint color when doing a color change? I'd be going from the factory red to probably desert tan or maybe white. Is it better to do this in the fall to get a little more working time out of the product vs. doing it in the summer when its 90 degrees?

Definitely wait for cooler temps. I did it when it was 85* & by the time I got all the way around, it was time to start doing another coat because it was setting up so fast. Also make sure the body panels aren't hot from the sun shining on it (I'm sure that contributed to mine setting up so fast, ~20 minutes). I went from dark green to desert sand. Since the green is so dark, it just looks like the door jambs are black when looking @ them w/the doors closed. Maybe 1 day I'll spray paint the door jambs FDE but I doubt it.

any idea how much it it would take to do just the roof? my clear is gone and i want to get it coated/painted before it rusts.

the truck is dark green and i was thinking white. but also considering a light battleship gray or military tan. but i dont want it to look like just "primered" the roof. any opinions?

The small kit would be plenty for just the roof.

***ETA***
I thought the small kit was 1/2 gallon. I don't think their small kit would be enough for the roof. I think you'd need TWO small kits. Sorry for the confusion.

I ordered some color chips last night and I'll see which one I like the best. I'm thinking dark sand/tan or trying to match the stock red color. I'll either do this in the fall or spring. My boss is thinking of doing this too on his LX so I'm going to talk to him about making a paint booth and doing both our trucks the same time.

Those of you have applied monstaliner to their trucks yourselves. How did you prep it? I know the kit comes with someone to sand/scuff it but the directions also say you can use an 80 grit sand paper. I was thinking of using an air palm sander with an 80 grit. I figured it would make the sanding a little quicker as well as get out more imperfections and scratches.

I did the prep with the supplied pads and also used 100-120 grit sand paper like you're talking. You just have to get rid of the clear coat and slightly get into the paint, not to bare metal. Wipe down with MEK.

Thanks. I'll pick up some 100 and 120 grit and hit the whole truck with the air sander.

This might be a dumb question but has anyone done the bottom half with monstaliner and then later on done the top half? I took my fender flares off and filled the holes and the look of it is driving me nuts. I am going on a camping wheeling trip in a week so I don't have time to do the whole truck before I leave.

Yes & that's what I'll be finishing this fall.

Flashing off?

That's the reason I can't do the whole truck before I leave. I can paint it next Sunday but then were leaving that following Tuesday.
Mine was fine to drive the next morning, probably sooner. If you're putting it in the bed of a trcuck then I'd wait a couple day.
