@Chamba. I remain shocked by the years I have seen your name pop up in so many auctions and identifying so many wrongs.. it’s just so freakin’ ironic and to keep reading these sad but informative events is so strange. Glad to see you’ll be working it all out

I should have known better, I really should. But I was distracted by my ankle surgery next day, the shiny paint, factory hard top, H55, full floater and the RHD. No one's fault but my own. The sellers took me, no doubt; but I let them. This was a $15,000-$20,000 project 43, nothing more. Really it needed to be sold as a non-running project by a more honest seller. I would be happy with it at that price point. The dissatisfaction comes from knowing I let myself be took.... and the fact that I don't have time for a project.

I've also just found it has no weather strip at the roof to side panel or hard top to windscreen....... so I'll order that too. CHA-CHING.

Fun project today: I painted the new factory bezel I got from @cruisermatt . They only come in chrome from Toyota, and since this isn't a Cheep I painted it Cygnus White, like all self-respecting 40 series bezels should be.

I spent about 2 hours wet sanding the chrome, then painted it with self etching primer and then with lacquer I had made by Napa in 1999 to paint the bezel on my Hj47. Amazingly, I've had these 2 cans in Australia and America (I didnt bring them when I lived in Panama) and three US states and it still sprayed and laid down beautifully. Ironic that I can find all this stuff but can't find my damned reading glasses when they are on my head.

Now to find the correct screws to mount the bezel.....

Old harness is mostly out.... what a pain. It was 'built' in the car, so there was no way to remove it without cutting it. Fortunately, very little cutting was required given the wires were simply twisted together everywhere. Unfortunately it means I can't use it to help create the new harness given its....terrible.

There were bare, exposed wires all over the place. It's no wonder it blew fuses so often.

Next I'll pull it out from the frame, but they 'hard wired' it all in with no plugs so i need to figure out which ones I need and where they go.

Baby steps.

Has anyone dealt with the horn on a Painless install?

I've ordered a new Toyota-style Hella horn set (no suprises but the horn in the 43 only works sporadically when you tap the trumpet....), but reading the Painless instructions it looks like it's now going to be a GM-style constant ground circuit.

Either way, I can make the Toyota units work. I'm just thinking through how I'll have to wire them. May have been easier to just order Chevy-style Hellas though.

Years ago (over 35 years) starting collecting factory wiring. Bought a used Ford van in the eighties. The harness to the fan switch split open like an over cooked hot dog. That and working HVAC and seeing control.wiring melted was the driving factor. Was worried about fire. Today appears PO's hack jobs to the wiring are the biggest concern. Doubt I have anything for your 82 FJ43R. Keeping what 82 FJ40LV wiring I have since I have the 82. It also being LHD did not have the removable dash panel the RHD had. Not sure what I pulled from a 84 HJ47RV which is a diesel not a petrol engine.

@Living in the Past I've got the Painless mostly figured out at this point, but thank you for thinking of me. Don't suppose your still have the bolt in dash from your Hj47 RV....? I'm fixing the holes in mine the PO drilled to install the Hilux radio, clock and warning lights. I had a complete bolt in dash but I'll be damned if I can find it.

I'm actually enjoying coming up with the perfect wiring for the way I'm setting this 43 up. I'll be running the wiring for the rear flood lights, front fogs, ignition kill, interior lighting (in the hard top and eventually on the roll bar), centre console stereo, etc at the same time as I run the rest of the wiring. My goal is to have this all look as clean as a factory install with the after market additions looking like Mr Toyoda himself whacked them in at Arakawa.

I'm hoping @cruisermatt gets my e locker in to his shop before I finish up because I want to run the wiring for the switch with the rest of my rear wiring.

The wrecked HJ47RV was over ten years ago.

Spend way to much money on it. It would have been much cheaper to just have gone to the auction and bought it but better half would have been more upset about that than the money. I did not get the insert dash panel because it was RHD and the instrument cluster because it was in KMs

Are you talking about Toyota's E Locker? If so do you have the long splined inner axle required. Do you have one?

No, I bought an Eaton E Locker. I had factory cable lockers on my LX: loved them. But this one is more about practical acquisition.

That 47 looks like many of the rigs I would get for Marv back in the day. I'd fill up a 40' container and send it over to him every year or so. I loved doing that.

I've always used the 'jiggle wires until the sparks stop or the problem goes away' method. I think it's the same method the Pakistani military uses in their technical wiring documents.

Seen a E locker diff that had a Torsen similar to Toyota's transfer cases when it wasn't locked. But couldn't find one that would fit the 9 1/2" Toyota diff. Does the Eaton require a full floating axle but not the long splined inner axle?

Here is what that HJ47RV looked like shortly before being wrecked.

It was spotted by the someone in the local club. Wasn't long after another member had a LEO friend send him a picture the night of the accident. Do not know if the owner has doors or what happened to it. Came from Queensland by stickers on it. By the dates the stickers it was imported as soon as it hit twenty five years. This was very nice unrestored cruiser. Really ashame it got totalled. The PTO winch was destroyed but from the driveshaft back was all okay. Only piece of the drivetrain I didn't buy was the 2H. Ambulance doors had some damage but zero rust think they were $35 for the pair. LX handle I believe I bought from.

Sorry I'm late old friend. So glad to see you back. Just got back myself...

I'll read through the thread and catch up!

Kevin! Great to see you. How are you? Great to be back, though I had hoped it would be in a drivable Cruiser.... but soon come.

Of all the things I miss most on Lexie, the absolutely stunning rack you made for me tops the list. It was a work of art.

@Living in the Past what a shame, that was a nice 47. Was everyone in it OK? I wish I could find one like that now for some parts scrounging.

Yes, the E Locker only works in full floaters with stock axle shafts, so front on NAS Cruisers or rear in the non-US axles. I had one in my Cheep and I loved it; so adding it here in the hope of using it at Moab next year. That, along with the Parabolics should give it some reasonable legs.

I still have an LX handle cover somewhere in my attic too..... I'll likely find it when I find my bolt-in dash after I no longer need it.

What I wish most I still had though is the LX windscreen I had. I hung on to that for YEARS when Marv finally talked me out of it. I would absolutely love to have one now for my 43....

Sorry I'm late old friend. So glad to see you back. Just got back myself...

WOW!

What a roller coaster ride this 43 has been. I laughed, I cried… then cried again. Just as all hope was lost there was a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

Listen, it’s only money and you can’t take it with you. What’s done is done. Look at the bright side. You’ve got a great looking, very rare rig there and you’re the exact person for this task.

Speaking of rare rigs… with your 47, then the LX and now a 43 and me with my 45 and BJ42 we’ve had everything but a 40 LOL. The 40 series Landcruisers are rare enough these days and in addition to that you and I seek out the fringe models. Just a thinking out load… anyway carry on doing your thing and let me know if I can help somehow from way up here.
