can you remove all glasses and have those replaced with some sort of plexyglass ..?

Yes, I plan to remove all doors and the tail gate, I plan to replace the rear most side windows with plexiglass and make tube doors that are skinned.

Gonna follow this one. Should be an awesome build!

I would maybe consider a 5 speed swap and a different tcase to get the power that the 1FZ makes to the ground, the A343 sucks up a lot of power.

As much as this could be an advantage, part of me wants to see what can be done with the stock powertrain.

At the same time, I would think that a 60-series transfer with the fancy xfer gears that drops both high range and low range would be the ticket. This will allow a couple of extra benefits, one which could be to use a taller final gear set for the fatter pinion and slightly stronger pinion shaft/gear interface. The other would be to allow maximum reduction and give you an effectively closer-ratio shifting gearbox due to the extra reduction.

Also, since you'll never need to unlock the center diff, having an xfer that doesn't have one could be to your advantage.

Definitely lighten the nose as much as possible. I would even consider moving stuff like the battery and maybe running a mid-mount winch to move the weight back. 8274 mounted mid ship without a super long rope to account for bunching up might do the trick.

Yeah I don't know where the majority of the loss comes from if it is the trans or TC that sucks up all the power but on the 80's you see 33+% drivetrain loss. I haven't tested the theory of locking the center diff and dyno'ing to see if it is a factor, but if it is all transmission loss, and the fact that you are already power limited I would do what ever I could to be more efficient.

I'm gonna guess its the transfer due to the offset layout where the rear wheel drive portion is running through the idler gears. Most other setups with the centered output are straight thru in 4th. No gears between the engine and the final drive.

I weighed my stock LX450 and it was 1500kg front, 1000kg rear. So definitely a nose bias for weight.

If we can use the split case and it is advantageous, I got a good one sitting here ready to go for the build. I myself am not real familiar with the trans & t-case in the 80. if we are losing 33% through the t-case that defiantly sucks.

There is talk of port & polish, obviously no cats, nice free flow exhaust and some other things to the engine. I know Jason would like to stroke the motor but for this first year I doubt we can budget that. Unless of course we got the stroker kit from a sponsor! :grinpimp:

It is Jason's idea and he is building this truck and driving it. He is pretty damn good at both. I am just along for the ride, to donate as much of my time and parts or a few bucks as I can. It is going to be interesting and fun, no doubt about it! He has talked about the same thing only using a 4-Runner, I am much happier he finally decided on an 80. If enough weight is lost the 80 is certainly a better platform than a 22RE and leaf springs.

Cheers

Rmp, it's a combination of the tcase and trans. I know autos are easier to drive but if any power can be freed up in the drivetrain I think it would be a big help.

By comparison most manual, straight through tcase cars lose about 15-18%

Difference of pushing a 4500 lbs truck with 135awhp.vs 180awhp. Lol

 Looking forward to where this goes.

I had an extremely productive weekend, while I did not really touch the M-80 I did build about 40' of shelving in my garage and cleared out a bunch of other shelves to make room for all the new parts. Got the M-80 pulled and ready to start ripping and tearing her down. I am thinking about just yanking the body off the frame to make all the suspension fab easier, I have access to a forklift so it would be pretty easy and I think it would make life a lot easier.

Subscribed. Cant wait to see how this goes.

SUB'd!!!

I've been having this same idea in my head for a while. I can't wait to see how yours comes out. If you need pit help for the race let me know.
