I was thinking down the road I might throw in a third battery and some solar panels up top. If I go that route I will need a good battery monitoring system and will tackle the issue then. Until then I just might install one of these only in 24 volt if possible.

This is where I was going... 12v =2 batteries.. 24v = 3 or more.

J,

Ya lost be a bit. I have two batteries and am at 24 volt already. The third battery will be a dedicated 12 volt system not hooked to the 2 existing batteries at all.

C,

The light bar arrived. I'll get the rack started mid-next week.

So, after days of wiring I think I have finally got things the way I want. Out with the old Japanese speaking nav system and in with the new!! I also replaced the HUGE converter with a much smaller and powerful one (yay technology!).

IMGP2728-XL.jpg

The converter tucked away next to the passenger seat (bolted to the frame of the seat, but will not rub!)

IMGP2734-XL.jpg

New 12 volt fuse block installed in the passenger foot well. I would have liked to put it elsewhere, but this is what worked. I wired the fuse block so it would turn on with the accessory on the ignition.

The new headunit!! I went with a Pioneer AVH-X3700BHS. The wife has the older unit (3500) and we really like it. The BT is nice, and the satellite radio is great!

Hey casey, I was hoping you could shine some light on the harness portion of the install? From what I understand you need to rerouter the switch power and memory constant from the wire harness to a 12v source (pyle converter). My question is do you need to do this with any of the other wires? Like the illumination wire for the dash lights? Or just connect it like normal to the harness. I would really like the head unit to dim at night.

Also, do you recall what 24V accesory wire you tapped into with the 24v/12v relay to switch off the fuse block and HU?

I connected the dimmer wire on the radio harness to the regular harness from the factory radio if I remember correctly. For 24 volt power to the relay I believe I used the cigarette lighter wire. I had to cut it anyways to switch the lighter from 24 volt to 12 volt for the cell phone charger. You can also use the ING fused connection from the factory under the hood. That is how I tapped power for the on board air compressor. It took me a minute to realize there was another small fuse block under the hood, but now that I know it is there I have used it for many things. Pretty handy!

Fuse block is powered by the converter, but will not "turn on" until the relay kicks in from the ignition. The converter is always on though, it provides the memory to the radio at all times.

Are you running a single converter or a dual system Casey?

I'm still on the ultimate quest for a stereo memory system that doesn't rely on a power-sucking 24-12V converter. Even the super low watt converters still pull a decent amount of amp-hours and while it's a non issue for days, it's an issue when rigs are parked for weeks. Ryan Davis and I brainstormed some options including installing a small 12V Lion battery that charged while the vehicle was running and the converter was live but they simply provided memory power to electronics when the vehicle is off. I think we found a small lion pack that could run a radio memory for several months? I need to kick that project back off with Jenny and Red Dragon.

Single for now. In the future I hope to be able to set up a solar charger with a dedicated 12 volt battery. That way I never have to worry about starting the vehicle while out and about.

With that being said my rig sits for 5 days at a time with no starting issues. Plus I just installed the Odyssey batteries so I am hoping that gives me a bit more leeway. I'm also kicking around picking up one of the small jump starter packs that are 24 volt capable.

What size converter are you running? They should go for a week or so, I worry when they sit for a month without starting :D

I just have the Pyle 30 amp one in there right now. I can understand being concerned about letting it sit for months. I have thought about getting a trickle charger for Toko because the wife only drives it every now and then. M maybe that would be the route to go for you. I have seen some that mount under the hood that look good!

Subscribed Mr Tibbs. Mine will be here 1st week in January. Good news is that we know the previous owner on mine- hope I don't find any rats nests...that was crazy how much wire you pulled out. Looks great- I wish I had the access you do the the talent that has worked on your cruiser.

Well, I don't want straight black. I think I need to break it up a bit. I was thinking something similar to this:
