ok guys, I can use some guidance. my friend is set on an AR, semi-settled on a ruger in 556, anyone have bad experience with one ? or recommend one in the 6-700$ range?

I'd suggest sticking with a regular gas operated AR for parts compatibility.

Simple quick version is there are 3 levels...
1. Cheap... PSA, Delton, DMPS, Smith & Wesson, etc, ..you can build one cheaper but it's not a good place to start for your first one.
2. Duty grade/Mil spec-ish... Colt, BCM, Daniel Defense.
3. Higher end competition/custom.

To save money the S&W is pretty good. If you want to get one that's made like you're life depends on it then just get the Colt. I've seen Colt's for $799 if you look around. (at least until the next shortage)

.... A friend has a 1929 Thompson that is an absolute blast to shoot

I would love to shoot one some day - I bet It would kick my azz LOL.

I have held CC permits in 7 states now ... The quality of training has varied greatly, but none truly covered the legalities very well (when you are justified vs when you are not). For detailed info on that subject, I have been s student of Massad Ayoob's writings and I highly recommend any CC holder review at least some of his works ...

I like Massad Ayoob's advice too but I would caution the legal details are specific to each state.

It can be very difficult to get exact answers for each state because some things are clear (like you can't shoot at someone running away) but other questions can be harder to answer, often because some details haven't been tried in court yet.

When CC in NC came about I wasn't a fan of the required class but now I think it's a important class every responsible gun owner should try to take to protect themselves.

I did the NC training and the basic takeaway is any time you are in fear for your life. I'd say that's a pretty good rule to live by, otherwise it NEVER leaves the holster.

It's true to say if you go online looking for NC laws regarding concealed weapons almost nothing addresses WHEN use is justified, but rather rules regarding who can carry, reciprocity, regulations, blah, blah. In some respects it feels like the justice system waits for an event to occur and THEN make the call on whether it was justified.

Even the wording for NC ("when and only when: 1) You actually believe deadly force is necessary to prevent an imminent threat of death, great bodily harm, or sexual assault, and 2) The facts and circumstances prompting that belief would cause a person of ordinary firmness to believe deadly force was necessary to prevent an imminent threat of death, great bodily harm, or sexual assault.") leaves the door open for debate over what you consider "imminent great bodily harm".

I would really like for there to be a library of "what if" scenarios to read and help better define "when to pull". In the CC class there were almost none.

The story of the woman shooting at the shop lifter is not a real big surprise. When we went for our CCP there were quite a number of women in our class that had never even shot a gun, were reading instructions on the firing ine. It was pretty scary actually.

Our instructor did actually go over quite a few scenarios demonstrating when you are within the law to pull the trigger.

There's no felony imbecile law, so I hope she gets nailed with felony discharge, endangerment, and going armed to the terror of the people. It'd be nice if the NRA pays for her prosecutors bill. What an idiot. I hope there is a parking lot camera at that Home Depot. We don't need her ruining it for the rest of us.

Ramon's summary is a pretty good simplification.

Those what-if scenarios are difficult for any instructor especially since they're almost never lawyers. and if you think about other legal issues it's not uncommon for the details to be debated until things go to court.

..take the class (even if you don't want a permit) and learn what you can to protect yourself if in case you ever have to use one.

Summary advice is don't be a cowboy, concealed carry and gun ownership come with a lot of responsibility and can really screw up your life if you do things wrong.

It was very clear to me in my CC training: You don't use Deadly Force over theft of personal property. Shoplifting is stealing property and unless that shopping cart presented a clear assault with the intent to kill you, she doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.

Will be surprised if she doesn't face hefty assault charges on the criminal side and She will likely face a civil suit . .

Its like the motto of the Gherka police - - if the knife is drawn it has to make blood, or whatever :)

Agree 110% .... Unless the shoplifter was trying to run her over with the vehicle :bang:

She will have a hard time proving fear of bodily harm to herself or a loved one. In many states if you are carrying, you are better off to avoid confrontation and be careful not to do anything that could be perceived as being the aggressor ....

Ok folks ... Need to move the following to make room for another acquisition. I figured I'd offer it here before I go take it in the shorts at any of the local CLT shops ....

Colt 1911 model 01991L Custom Tactical Govt Model. Pistol has had accurizing / reliability work by Colt and wears three dot sights (not NS) and ambi-safety. Comes with three mags, two sets of grips and all the original paperwork/box/etc.

If you have any interest, hit me with a PM and we can discuss. Note that I am in SC so if it crosses the state line, we will have to get an FFL involved :(

Got a care package full of magazines from Brownells yesterday.

On a side note, I've recently been buying ammo in calibers that I hope to own one day simply because Academy Sports always seems to have ammo on sale lately. .45GAP anyone? No...I left that one behind, but there was plenty of .357SIG on sale, too. Some stuff is $8-$12 off per box (especially in rifle calibers).

Lately the local Walmart has had most any caliber I wanted plus others I just keep an eye on ...
45acp, 45 colt, 38 spl, 357sig and 357 s&w, 44 mag, lots of 9mm, .40, and 380.

Academy runs deals you just can't find other places. They had Ted Nugent .308 that was Barnes TSX with a real high-end FPS for ~ $1/round for a while, which, back then, was a pretty good deal - not sure now. I bought more than I needed and then sold the gun of course and the ammo.

I like looking at this from time to time on ammo prices: GunBot 300blackout rifle ammo

I have it set up for 300 BLK, but you can search for most common rounds and it spits out a summary of online pricing. Its not perfect, it seems to miss some here/there - - but it is pretty cool.

When I stop spending money on this truck . .LOL . . I would like to get into longer range shooting. I had a Armalite AR10 started that was going to be my gun for that, but needed the $$ and didn't love it, so sold it.

This one is high $$ for a bolt action, but I am intrigued by it:

Ruger Precision Rifle™

Lot of money for it (going for $1200 online), but it already has an adjustable trigger, no need for any changes to the magazine/bottom metal and it takes PMAGs, adjustable stock and a threaded barrel, so I don't think you would have to do anything to it out of the box vs what a lot of guys do to their Rem 700s.

Anyone have a smith and wesson shield? I'm thinking about getting one as my carry and was wondering if anyone had any opinions.

I've got a Shield. I'm still a novice shooter but I really like the compact size of the shield. I've shot the G43 and looked at the CCP and PPS. The G43 had a shorter grip and had a little more kick. The CCP is getting bad press about the long trigger reset and the PPS has hard edges on the grip that felt uncomfortable to me. The shield fit me the best with the 8+1 mag. For a subcompact it shoots rather well and the recoil is very manageable for such a small gun.
