Might be interested if you have a 1911 "compact". I have been looking at a lot of different options over the last couple of weeks. I really like to watch hickock45 videos - even though he rarely complains about a gun. He really seemed to rave about the Range Officer Compact, despited being a self-admitted Glock fanboy. I really like my XDM. I like the Kimper Pro Carry II, but man, they are proud of that thing.

Anybody happen to have a Range Officer Compact? I'd love to get a chance to shoot one and haven't run across one at the range yet.

:beer:R

Oh, wanted to see if anyone else came across any load failures with Winchester FMJ? I had one round (out of about 175 I shot the other day) that wouldn't load. Seems the brass had a sharper lip than normal and even though it would chamber, the slide lacked 1/8" or so from shutting. I confirmed the load ramp is still nice and smooth.

I had one round that would not load in a revolver last time out. Seriously ... It Would slide into the cylinder but the cylinder would not close. I could not see it with the naked eye but it acted as if the bullet rim was too thick. All others were fine.

Just a tiny bit embarrassing when you can't load your REVOLVER.

If you are talking about Winchester White Box, yes, I have had occasional failure to feed due to the lack of a good taper crimp. Amazingly, American Eagle 230gr seems to be the most reliable.

LOL - some of the stuff I've seen at public ranges would make you feel better I'm sure. One would think the quality on these mass produced rounds might be a tad higher...

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about. That will be my last box of that stuff for sure. Not a huge deal, but it's scary when you are talking about whether or not there are defects in ammunition. I've had great luck with the Federal and Blazer Brass, so that'll probably be all I use going forward for plinking. I bought that Winchester back when it was hard to find 9mm at all, and I have always trusted Winchester too :meh:

My buddy Ben and I have had awesome luck with the Freedom Munitions ammo, both new and remanufactured, mostly 9mm so far. It's cheaper than buying Federal or Blazer Brass in a store for damn sure.

Freedom Munitions gets great marks for 9MM - that is about all I have left in their HP's.

I need to buy some more FMJ for the range.

I will say that folks w/ 300 BLK (on those boards) have had some issues with FM's 300 BLK. I would be sure to use a gauge for their rifle calibers above 5.56.

Of course, I couldn't have anything new without modifying it to some extent. So, seeing as Kimber uses a plastic main spring housing, on a stainless steel pistol, I had to rectify that. As well, needed to help with magazine changes when shooting matches, a matching magwell needed to be part of the upgrade.

Ed Brown makes a nicely matching SS main spring housing, machined in their "chainlink" pattern, very closely matching the Kimber machining, has a nice magwell.

Nice! Was the maxwell a simple drop in or did it require some fitting?

Now for some flat bottom grips to go with the Magwell. Wilson occasionally runs some good sale prices on their Cocobolo Starburst grips ... In fact, they just ended one.

Easy, simple drop-in, mine didn't need any fitting. I'm happy with the grips now, may need to look at options down the road but, now, I'm ready to take it for a match run...

Good to know that. I have a one pice full length guide rod to install in a custom I bought this summer in WY. I hope my install is as straight forward.

When you are ready for grips and you want wood rather than G10, look at these.

The pistol that I bought in WY came with some of these and they are beautiful. Also, Kimber grips from a Gold Combat would work as well since they come from the factory with a Magwell.

Enjoy!

I can say that my one piece full length guide rod install went very smoothly. I used the original plug with the Nighthawk guide rod, I might get the rod shortened an eighth or so, but all is good.

Photo shows Bork Custom with old guide rod.

Today is clearly maintenance day. Also installed a set of Williams Fire Sights to help my aging eyes on a Ruger Single Six Convertible.

So did you buy it? :)

I got good news today from Chatham Co Sheriff's office regarding the transfer of my SBR - Should be no limitations from the county on doing that as long as I fill out the form 5320.20 correctly.

I also did finalize the trade of two Glocks for a Armalite AR-10B, sold the Glock 17L and then picked up this NIBX barrel'd Glock 19 Gen 3:

Love my G19, bought it NIB 20 years ago, still functions perfectly...

Weejub,

Hells yeah I bought it. The .40 is getting harder to find than hens teeth. I probably overpaid for it a little, but by the looks of the barrel, slide and magazine, was either unfired, or fired once or twice. Plus it came with 3 extra mags, which are going for $150 a piece now a days since everybody with a P7m13 realizes you can use the .40 mag in the 9:meh:

I just did a 5320.20 form when I moved my SBRs from VA to FL, took the ATF about a month or so to turn it around after submission. Hopefully they will add that Form to their Eform website. I did a Form 1 online for an SBR conversion and it cleared in 3 weeks;).

Now form 4s are another story. I am still waiting on two Form 4s to clear for two cans I bought back in June:(

Following up to the above post, over the last 24 months or so, I have made a few upgrades. In my typical style, this translates to acquisitions without offsetting disposals ;) . Given storage constraints and the high potential for a period of unemployment in 2015, I will be going through the inventory over the next few weeks to figure out what needs to go. Once I figure that out, I'll give ONSC members first looks. Will likely include a few 1911 variants and one or two other quality pieces .....

Seem to be constantly in the market for my first 1911. Would be curious to know what will be hitting the market. ;)

Thanks for the info, Phrogg - - very helpful. I was wondering if I could efile the 5320.20 - but I couldn't find it - now i know :). I also had good luck with the efile on the SBR - still took about 4.5 weeks.

Sam, let me know if you're looking to offload any ammo or M1A mags. I'm interested. My Remington 700 is currently at the gunsmith having the pacific tool and gage bottom metal installed to give it a detachable box magazine. Should help with the competition shoots. I will post pictures when I get it back.
For anyone who is interested PHGA is doing a tactical two gun match next weekend that I'll be at. It is good practice and good fun.

@Phares, no M1A mags and no 7.62 ammo available. Gotta keep that for my 7.62 AR platform gun.

Tell me more about the match. Used to shoot IDPA a lot and would like to get back to it.

Sam
