Anyone have experience with these old Coleman heaters? Thinking about picking one up that looks to be in serviceable shape....I know nothing about them...other than I don’t have one.

Or, you can go Frankenstein with one of them…if you suddenly find yourself over run with Coleman Stuff…

I've had one. They're pretty cool. I think I only fired it up in the garage a couple.times.... got it from a friend, never really devised a use for it though...

My little Coleman 502-700 Sportster stove performed well during the camping trip. After a few days however, the pump began to fail (I suspect the old leather gasket just gave out) but I did manage to get the stove charged for a few days of eggs, coffee, sausage, bacon & burgers.

I replaced the old plunger with the "Coleman Universal Plunger Metal Part #: 242J5201 ; 4 Inch Long Plunger Pump Repair Kit ; Compatible Stoves & Lanterns"
Amazon product ASIN B07YGSHC8Q
What a difference! That new plastic plunger really pumps up the tank fast and to a much higher pressure than I ever achieved with the leather-based pump.
The flame literally looked like it was off a propane stove.

I had to convert it to use the spring, snap fitting and the backing plate but that took 5 minutes.

@FrazzledHunter I would go back to the leather pump cup. They last indefinitely. Yours probably needed some oil. You can buy them by the dozen at Old Coleman Parts if you want a new one. Those plastic doodads are pretty sorry. You can almost always pop he leather out and wet it down with whatever you have, bend it outwards, and it will work. That little black disc of plastic/rubber gets really hard over time and when it quits pumping your screwed.

Those leather cup lasts almost indefinitely If it's isn't holding a seal. Just put a little bit of oil on it. Vegetable oil works and even spit will work!

Thanks for the tips.
I made sure the leather was oiled and I did keep the old leather plunger for backup. That stove & leather pump was bought in the late 70's BTW!
It looked OK to me but it just seemed to occasionally totally slide without any pushback when pumping in the field. OK once I built up some pressure after about 50-75 pumps it really began to push back and build up pressure. I suspect some pressure was required to fully expand the leather gasket. But once expanded, it pumped great.

I also bought a new leather cup as backup for the backup LOL.

$80.00?!?!?!? Holy cow, that's ridiculous. I dont even want to know how much they wanted for the other appliances. The most I've ever payed for a lantern is $25, and that's only if it's a real nice one.

Yeah, the $80 was at an antique store, the stoves were in a thrift store, $25 maybe?

Is that vent painted? It may not hold up unless you used very high temp paint. There is a place that will actually use porcelain(like from the factory)if you ever want to go that route.
