Lots of great memories sitting around one just like that at Lake Powell in N. N. AZ, as camping on the beaches in the remote coves, there just wasn't any firewood to speak of, and any driftwood was too wet to burn. Late at night, with coyotes howling right close, it was comforting to have some light.

Old or not, that one's in great shape and a good find,

Got a few from my dad today, will see if I can get them going.

Yeah buddy. Lucky dog. Let’s see them after you fire them up.👍

What can I get for a Coleman enthusiast for Christmas? Other than more Coleman equipment obviously. Is there any sort of history book maybe?

Question for you guys with vintage lanterns. I have a few that I used to being camping, but the mantles were always failing or would fall apart on the drive to the campsite. Did I just get lucky with a few good mantles that could take a beating? Are we supposed to put new mantles on all the time, or are the new ones I am buying garbage?

I've had a bunch of old coleman lanterns and stoves sitting in the garage for over a decade. This weekend I decided to take them out and fire them up. Just needed a little cleaning and everything worked perfectly, even the mantles were orginal. Someone even gave me a couple gallons of old coleman fuel and judging by the price tag and cans, it's probably a couple decades old too.

General consensus is that new manufacture Coleman mantles are junk. If you want to can source some old Coleman mantles with trade name "Silk Lite" on eBay or wherever. Better yet pop on over to OldColemanParts.com and buy some Peerless brand mantles. Owner Mike is an awesome guy to deal with and you'll love the mantles.

The mantles should survive bouncing around in the truck unless the trail is pretty severe. I've had one Peerless mantle on a 200A for a couple years now.
