Swing out rear bumper

I am looking for a rear bumper with a rear tire swing out but with so many different options out there and brands I don’t know which one to choose from. I just got this FJ80 not to long ago but I also do have the spare tire under the back! I was also told in another thread that the factory one might have re reinforcements to it does this mean I should go a factory one over a nicer aftermarket one?
 
I have been happy with my Slee bumper. Very robust and has taken a lot of abuse. Split a highlander from the headlight back through the rear door and doesn't look at all worse for wear. Lots of good options these days.
 
The factory tire swingout was not an option domestically and is only an option now via importation.. The reinforcements are required (not an improvement over other designs) as they are very much like plates installed in the rear pillar for you to attach the swing out to with out being only attached to the thin sheet metal back there. I think you could do it and it would be lighter than getting an aftermarket bumper with one, It won't be more durable necessarily and it might not be cheaper. It might be extra expensive to import one and make sure you get all the right parts. I am not sure how the reinforcement is mounted in the rear pillar and i am not sure how you can get to the spot to install them, so not commenting on that. I personally wouldn't consider it because i think it might be hard for me to do well with my skill set, but i encourage you to do it (with your money of course) and document it for the rest of us.

The only reason you need a rear carrier is if you plan on going larger than 33" tires FYI. Otherwise the stock location is fine.

Most people here like the Slee and 4x4Labs
 
Before we talk brands & that jazz, which crowd do you think yourself / your style of use:

1.) Casual / camper-utility / ‘overland-type’.

-or-

2.) Storage be damned, I want the least overhang as I want to be a rock-crawler as I learn/progress in my skill level.

I said all that as certain bumpers are great for minimal overhang / chop the RR framerails a bit, and some are big & provide copious storage & say integrated access if you wanted a ladder to a RRT (rooftop tent).

Seriously - the RR bumper is about the single $$$ mod in one lump, so really decide your use - I had a 4x4 Labs & have a NLA bumper on my last 80, I need storage over the way a 4x4 Labs is best for rock crawling/least overhang.

Also, you get $2K - $3K shipping inc will be the pricetag -so you might indicate your max desire / flexible $$ to drop.

Below you'll find 2 photos of the OEM tire carrier along with the 2, D pillar internal mounting brackets. Not only do you need the 2, D pillar brackets to install this, but the tail gate has a latch plate that needs to be installed too. You use to be able to buy this in the USA from Cruiser Parts. But by the time you get done paying for it, and it's shipping cost, you're getting right close to a 1000 bucks, and then you still need to install it. There is a thread here on Mud by a Mud member who bought, and installed one, along with the internal brackets that had lots of photos, but when i searched for it i couldn't find it.

In the photo below you can see the latch plate mounted to the lower tail gate that locks the swing out tire carries in place when in the closed position, along with the overseas offset lic. plate bracket. Please take note of the upper swing out tire carrier anti rattle bracket mounted on the upper tail gate that you'll want to install too.

Can you provide any info on the license plate bracket?
 
If you can weld the 4x4 Labs is the no brainer.

Otherwise it’s really hard to beat the Slee on overall quality.


Or Delta VS.


Maybe let him decide his use 1st, seems like he just wants to get the ROW market spare carrier either for use or budget.

Anybody know the max size tire that ROW spare carrier can take, in case that’s where he’s headed? (I’ve only seen them when up in Canada a few times)

IDK anything about tire capacity - that might help him. :meh:
 
Can you provide any info on the license plate bracket?
Below you'll find a link that has all the info and photos you'll ever want. But just a word of warning if you decide you want to install one of these. Just make sure you measure twice before you drill your lower tail gate, because you only get one chance to get it right.

I considered this route. In the end, I just used some aluminum scrap and drilled it out as an adapter. I used some rubber stripping with an adhesive side to protect the back side from the extra through bolt on the left. Total cost was about $2 and is fully reversible:

agree w/ Slee and double swing out option...

Slee is nice, butso many great options out there now.

If he wants the “full Monte” of a bumper, Moses Lake is within driving range to Delta.....something to consider as Slee’s shipping (even by freight) is big $$$.

Iron Pig, Slee, Delta - all great contenders, and somebody said K Hanna might be doing work again (those are the Caddilac of RR bumpers, the hinges alone are monsters).

If Hanna isn’t back, I’d look at the modularity of the Delta - I haven’t seen it 1st-hand but if the build quality matches the trick things of it, that & saving the ship charge would be a strong contender,

On my remote camping rig, I have a swing out for the spare. Larger tires make the spare not fit underneath and interior space is at a premium when remote camping, thus the spare goes outside on a swing out. Luckily, this is not a driver because living with it is a pain. You have to swing the tire out every time you want to get into the rear. I just find it annoying.

On my other 80, I have the spare mounted inside. It is more of my wheeler and interior space is not as important. However, it does take up a lot of space for something that rarely, if ever, gets used.

If you aren't wheeling the rig (gravel roads don't count) or have large tires, underneath is the superior spot for the spare.

I bought it to be a camper-utility rig and then slowly work into a overlander one day but not anytime soon I also think the swing out looks super nice and I don’t mind having to swing it open to get to the rear that doesn’t bother me. But I really don’t want to drop 3k on one that’s a little steep 2k would be alright if it’s got the extra holder for fuel but the other thing I didn’t take into consideration is that the prior owner put a trailer hitch on so would I have to get rid of that before getting a swing out, should I find one that has a trailer hitch intergraded into it, or lastly just get rid of that all together because I don’t ever on plan on towing anything with this rig?

I don’t want to install it on the inside and when I am going more remote I don’t want to run the chance of it possible hit a rock or anything happening underneath the rig. I know what I plan on doing with it and yes partly the reason I want to do the swing is because it makes the truck look better but I also don’t mind having to swing it out like I was talking about in another response on this thread
 
My buddy showed me a shop out here in washington that makes custom ones they are called AdventureFab has anyone heard of these guys before and are they any good? I don’t mind going a local guy of course it depends on price.
