Nothing against this post, but there are places in Moab an 80 on 35 or 37's will not go. Ouray and Telluride are routinely done in Subaru's. I think if you are talking about this kind of wheeling, 40's and link setups have no place in the discussion. I think the people going linked and 37's+ are much more dedicated wheelers.

maybe, but do it because you want it, not cause everyone else is. you have a perfect set up ow. its amazing what an 80 on 35s let alone 37s can do MOAB was easy as was ouray and telluride, northest uwharrie cake, absolute cake. again JMO

This has been done. It was done by a guy in CA, and wrecked after SEMA.

I'd love for someone with deep pockets and the extreme attn to engineering excellence to mod an 80 like an Arctic Truck for US road use.

If you want 40s do it. You might break stuff but all depends on how hard you push. Be easy with throttle and front locker and see what happens.

Thats the plan! They're on now and my 37s are sold so we'll keep testing the waters and see what this axle is capable of.

For instance... my buddy built his mini truck axle with 6 shooters, chromos, chromo hub gears, all arp studs, gussets and beat on it with 40" stickies and on occasion would blow up 3rds but not a lot honestly... he did end up going to tons but mostly because he kept breaking tcase outputs, chromo and all... couldn't gear low enough with yota axles.

Different weight but smaller axle too.

Anyway I think if you throw all the baller parts at it you'll be fine except r/p. You could have someone set you up s cryod tight 3rd too. My next concern would be sector shaft. And go 2" .250 dom tie rod as well.

That's what I did; cryo'd both gear sets and sent the front third to Zuk (rear was setup locally). I think it's a worthwhile investment if you plan to run big tires on the 8" diff.

Try Fordyce :smokin:
Now we need 40’s to do Fordyce??? Perhaps if you want to run it in half a day and never have to stop or back up. My last rig was a trailer queen on 39.5” all locked up , an Atlas, the whole shebang and I got rid of it for an 80 because I felt like I was taking candy from a baby. The trail actually got boring. That was a dodge full size on good leaf springs. I can only imagine how boring a public trail would be in a three linked 80 on 40’s. The next generation of wheelers won’t leave home unless they are rolling Grave Digger.

I was awed at what I saw guys on YouTube doing in locked 80‘s with a simple 3-4” lift and 36-37” tires plus carrying friends and gear all protected from the elements. So, as you can imagine, I’m a little upset to find out I need a three link and 40’s to conquer Fordyce.

A body lift will fix all your problems...:worms:

Word.

That said I do just speed run the trails now. It gets a bit annoying to run into traffic.

You forgot to tell him to get off your lawn.

Updates... Ive seen a lot of action on Instagram

Updates!

Ok - everyone got me so paranoid that the second I touched a dirt road with the new 40s on that I'd blow my front axle sky high and die in a fiery accident. So my good buddy helped me acquire one of his diamond axles in the front. 67" wms, set up for full hydro & 4 link so I'll need to mod that up a touch.

To help pay for this I sold off my bumper, rack, RTT, spare wheels & tires & some guns.

Here is what the 80 looks like right now:

The plan for the diamond is to go ahead and do the 3 link.
- Got Glen over at Radflo working on a set of 14" dual rate coilovers w/ resi
- Chris over at MarsFab in Charlotte, NC is going to help with welding skillllllls & getting the steering setup
- Goal is to be able to do hydro assist eventually but that will be out of budget at the moment.

Tried to put body lift on a few weekends back, broke 3 bolts (2 up front & 1 in the rear). They're 100% rust fused to the body/body mount cylinder. I'm going to hold on that and figure out a better way to go about getting that fixed up. In the meantime, I may not do body lift anymore. This low stance on the 40s really looks nice.

I think that might be about it, helped a few buddies yesterday get their 80's in order. Replaced the front axle w/ a locked axle in my buddies red 80 pictured below. We'll be doing it again soon on my friend @2RUNNERTOM

Now that you have all the shiny new parts, take it wheeling and see how long the front diff really lasts. I'm think a nice staircase/waterfall climb at WOT. You know you wanna :)

I already sold my front axle to @2RUNNERTOM and don't want to damage his new baby! My ole gal is in pavement pounder mode till the swap happens :(

The 40s look sweet, still waiting to see this rig around town one day so I can stop and ogle it.

Hydroassist isn't terribly expensive if you piece it together and tap the box yourself. I would suggest getting a pump though with ports for a remote reaervoir.
