Here is a video of the oil cap and hose:

From personal experience, I'd recommend replacing the fuel filter and fuel pump sock. Also harmonic balancer if the rubber looks bad--can crack/separate leading to lots of vibration at high RPMs.

That is a very real possibility for me. Previous owner said they did the cats, but they get hot enough to make the passenger area concerningly hot to the point my partner asked if something was on fire

Complaints about hot floor over the exhaust are common

ahh the amber glow of the check engine light came to me this evening...
41 - tps signal (replaced tps with a no name one, ordered another from toyota)
71 - egr (I think I accidentally swapped r and p hoses during baseline work)

Based on that, I'm guessing you have a number of vacuum leaks. It should nearly die when you do that.

It only sounded like it slowed a bit.

yeah you are right, I found two vacuum leaks under the upper intake I missed before, and the PCV hose was too big creating a leak as well. I replaced those and now on fire up the engine idles much better.. Really wants to die now if I remove the oil cap

FWIW my 94' has no problem holding 60-70mph at 337k miles. I'm around stock weight though (5200lbs) not 7000 and this assumes normal driving (not up Teton pass kind of stuff).

I'm almost certain yours will run a lot better once you tune it up, fix all the vacuum leaks, adjust the TPS, bump the timing up to 7 degrees, etc.

Alright, I thought super hard about this and I really want to keep this engine.

makes sense. I will keep plugging away at this and let people know what I find.

This is a 1FZ-FE with OBD1 computer

If you find you need/want to redo the existing engine, reach out to @Fj80oregon. I believe he is near the Portland area and he does engine rebuilds.

Being a 94 some of the turbo kits wouldn't work as is because the OBD-1 doesn't play well and you would need a stand alone computer. @Cruisers and Co had a post about working on one for the OBD-1 rigs but IIRC it is not complete yet.

Thanks for the shout! We've been chatting previously to this and @zeroecco is up to speed where we are at with the 93/4's.

Yeah these guys are the best! They are the ones making it so hard to decide what to do! great product coming I think and one of the two shops I would trust my rig to

replaced the TPS again and now idling is better. and that hunting tested you mentioned now happens to me:

I will push the timing up today and let people know
Living not too far away with similar terrain, my '96 had some troubles at 9* advance. Specifically in very warm weather, when lugging it a little bit on a hill that wasn't quite enough to trigger the trans to downshift, it would just fall on its face. A little examination with my ODBII reader showed that it was backing the timing off to around 0* when this would happen... I backed off to 6* advance and it doesn't seem to pull as much out in those situations. I think I was triggering the knock sensor. Not exactly scientific, but mine seems to work better at 6*. Hoping you get all the bugs worked out... I agree with everyone else that your description sounds down on power and it seems like you're finding the issues.

Also, I've got a question about your UV block tint... Is it included in that first pic? I'm looking for something that blocks the heat but doesn't make it harder for me to see and that looks really light, what specific brand is it? Did it make a noticeable difference? Did you get it done in the Portland area and if so, by who?

Ceramic pro services east did the tint for me. Did really good work IMHO. the first photo was original tint. The current tint is in the photo attached. the tint makes a world of difference. Interior temps are down, and we do not get burnt in the cab anymore.

The tint is: Ceramic IR. it is a little darker but def in the legal limit.

Nice, thanks.

My AC is working like a dream since I rebuilt it, but with all the windows on my 80, I can tell a huge difference just going through a shady area, so I've been really wondering about the ceramic tint. Sounds like money well spent.

ac in my rig works, but the tint makes it better and more comfortable
