Spare tire on rear door possible on gx470?

I saw one on instagram on a 120 and thought it looked good. I think the one pictured is from Wilco, but at $800 and 100lbs - I think I would opt for a full rear bumper.
I looked at that as well, but it's way too much money to spend on a compromise, IMO. The CBI fold down carrier is a much better option if you aren't getting a bumper. Probably the route I'll go.

$350

CBI fold down hitch tire carrier

I do drive a Lexus you know ...:pompous:

And why is everyone so concerned about adding weight ... its not a race car or an extreme rock bouncer ... i wouldnt try to add weight on purpose .... but some people obsess over it like "nope I'm not gonna compromise taking on weight for what I need... I want a winch but they weigh too much I'll get someone else to pull me out...iv got this 33" wheel and tire strapped to my roof or taking up all my room in the trunk to save weight"...

Is it bc of gas mileage?
That left the room when we put heavy off road tires on the vehicle. .. it already wasnt the most econ friendly to start with

And I'm not picking on anyone in particular
I just see people saying this all the time ...

I don't think the gx has a tuff time carrying the extra loud ... it's got plenty of power... iv got front and rear steel bumpers and I never felt it make a difference

Just my $.02

Has anyone actually purchased this CBI carrier? I would fear it would rock and sway? If it doesn't then it would be a great alternative to achieve the look and functionality that we are trying to achieve.

What about doing something like this from the 80 forum? I was concidering doing it to my 80 when it was a daily driver. seems like the most tried and true build without actually building a full bumper

Tire carrier in stock rear bumper

Not sure it would be any cheaper than the CBI but it looks freaking cool. I would place it on the Driver Side due to the barn door.

Never seen the GX and Prado side-by-side before, but it looks to me like Ferg's reasoning is sound. When you compare them from both the back and side, they appear virtually identical. So, what would be the logic behind changing major components on the two trucks ever so slightly that they wouldn't interchange? I know in other components (suspension components, wheels, etc.), many Toyota parts are, essentially, standardized. Granted, like you mentioned, it's not uncommon for manufacturers to change certain sheet metal to differentiate between models, but doors, roof lines, and overall configurations usually stay the same.

Man, having a rear door tire carrier would be exactly what I need, as I'm not very fond of any of the aftermarket rear bumper/tire setups currently available.

Edited: All that being said, I'm still hopeful Gentleman is going to be successful in coming up with a tire carrier design that integrates into the factory rear bumper - very similar to the one incorporated into the 80 in the above post. That would be the best of both worlds.....at least for me it would.

it would be alot more than the cbi im sure and you wouldnt want it on the driver side ... you would have to walk around the swing out everytime you need to get something out of you trunk ... you would create a hallway behind your vehicle ...

Ok it's a little extreme for most, but it channels my inner Mad Max tendencies!

On a serious note, I know a rear bumper is the way I will go when it's time. Wish they all didn't cost around 2k though haha

Would be awesome if someone would make a "weld your own kit" at a discounted price...

I mean who doesn't need the ability to cross mile deep crevasses on their way to Starbucks? Sign me up!

I was just thinking of the door opening towards the passenger side. but I guess it would make a hallway if it were to open to the driver side. just a thought. mine is a DD and it would be nice to have the "off road" look and functionality but still be able to access everything. I am not sure how much it be to build but thought it would be a very nice addition to the GX world. Just my opinion.

Scat

That thing is awesome looking... a little much for the sales world though. lol Customers would be like where are we going for lunch MOAB! Which would be awesome!

I agree ... its on my list of things to build for WGW ... it think it would pare nicely with the "Incognito" hidden winch mount hoping it could be attached to open with the door the way the SSS rear bumper does

I agree. It would be a great addition to the "incognito" functionality of these rigs. I would definitely be interested that is for sure! So if this build start to take shape let me know. I have a buddy here in Tulsa who can weld and others around the state that are pretty damn good. Feel free to PM me if you do the rear swing out spindle. I know that you have a TON of us constantly hounding you so whenever it happens will be good enough.

Man those Arctic trucks are so damn cool. And that tire carrier seems pretty cool as well, but its def beastly. I'd hate to have to swing that thing down every time i needed in the back (or had to change a flat even). Looks like the winch might be in the way so you'd maybe have to pull that out of the way every time as well...

Anyway, this thread is full of some great ideas. I think if the Prado rear doors were easier/cheaper to get hold of in the USA, I'd already be trying one out (but someone would most likely have already beat me to it already anyway heh) I'm betting that it would work. But given my plans I have for my GX, I think I'll just be saving up for a full rear bumper. I'm sworn to secrecy, but I was told by a well-known fab shop that they have front and rear bumpers in the works and hope to be ready for production on them by mid-2016. Nice to have more options coming about for the GX.

Looking forward to all the stuff @THeGeNTLeMaN has been talking about as well.

I'm actually looking at picking up another GX for the wife to drive and that will for sure be a lot less extreme of a build...something I would love to throw an Incognito winch plate onto.... ;) Maybe I go for the Prado door on hers...she might not like the spare tire in that spot though. I'm actually making an offer on another one at lunch today.... wish me luck!

things are in the works for WGW ... but starting a company and designing a consumer product takes time to get right .. i wont put anything out that is not what i say it is ... always appreciate the support and faith in the venture

@THeGeNTLeMaN ever thought about doing kickstarter to raise some capital (if that is a need)? I bought the TRED PRO this way and would be willing to do it again. I think the members of the forum have seen your work (between the Incognito winch mount and the work with SSS) and are willing to trust your work (and word) - which would make this a viable option. Just a thought. I think we are all excited about having some of the GX specific needs addressed with your products.

I appreciate that @UNCnalledge ... the "in the works" i'm speaking of is a partnership with an already existing offroad company (whos name iam not allowed to mention at this time) ... how ever instead of me trying to get started from nothing and going through the bumps and bruises of getting started and marketing and a web site and shipping and building all by myself... WGW will be a line of products through another developed company that I will design and manage along side my partner ... I will also be a help to that company in any other way such as designs and production efficiency

these things will be announce after the new year and after we have come to terms that all parties involved can agree on ... but so you guys know thats where WGW is at , at this point

Would be kind of cool to have Toyota and Land Cruiser emblems too. I thought about doing what this guy did.
2005 Lexus GX470 AKA Prado 120 Series

I leave my Lexus parked in the middle of nowhere often for a week or more while on canoe and backpacking trips. I thought about doing this to lower the "I am going to mess with this Lexus" problem but it would still look so damn cool I still think it would not stop those bung holes.

I didn't have a big enough bag. From what I saw it will fit for sure, but it won't fit a larger tire without A spacer and addressing the bumper (it was moulded as well). Rears: above post....I got a Prado badge with the Toyota anniversary custom name tag thing, love it
