yeah, we were planning on a Fall trip, but I need to take care of a few problems, seems never to end. A few weeks project can turn into a few years real quick. I can't express how much fun it was to travel with the 55, so worth the time and effort. Sure we could of taken the truck or car, but for a 55 guy, just packing up the wagon for the trip was cool. Keep at it!

After spending way too much time on this, I've got a tailgate window working without a lot of gear noise. I played with three different motors, but only had the one brass gear ready, I'll need to machine the new one down later. One of the motors ran noticeably slower on the down stroke and this was without the window installed. The last thing I tried was different grease and that worked. I was using Super Lube originally and switched to a German silicone based grease made for bearings, etc. It is a heavier grease than the Super Lube. It seems like the white Lithium base grease, that was in all the gears, tends to harden over time. Hopefully this new grease holds up and doesn't get hard.

I also hooked up the little lever that stops the tailgate handle from working with the window up. It's really the only lock on the tailgate. I don't have the safety switch in, but wanted some way of stopping someone from just opening the gate. Not sure if it's the exact way it came from the factory, but it works!

Yes an “oil type grease” will not “cake” like standard grease.

Our window gear boxes don’t need the thickening agents used in “common” grease, they will never see the RPM or heat most greases are designed to operate in.

Try some Skill Worm Drive Lubricant, works well for our application.

Hey Jim,

Seems this an oil type lub, does it stay in the gear housing? I was thinking about using some corn head grease...John Deere Special-Purpose Corn Head Gun Grease - AN102562

It's a 0 rated grease, good for leaking gear boxes, etc.

So would the Skill worm drive lube be a good one for rebuilding windshield wiper transmissions?

Yes, all slow moving worm drives benefit from a thinner non-congealing grease, the Skill worm drive lube is cheap and readily available but if you’re like Ron you might have some suitable substitutes sitting in the barn.

Readily available = local farm & ranch?

Thought I'd post here also, just in case some of you 69 grille lovers didn't see the classifieds. Offkilter was on the ball and seen the grille lenses for sale on Specter Offroad website. I ordered a set and got them mounted. I like them a lot! They were the last lens that I couldn't replace with new. I had to make some small nylon spacers, so the screws wouldn't crack them, but other than that, perfect! New on top, old fogged on bottom.

Hey Jim,

I thought I had another set somewhere, still looking. I'd like to keep these for a spare unless you need them.
