Shaky mirror fix 2 minutes 2 zip ties

As far as going around the whole mount, do you have trouble with full range of motion? Mine is holding up great on both sides with it only over the top of the mount frame. I did a friend's 80 and his is holding up great as well.

It seems that if you were to do it in the "ugly green" like the white chicken ;p , it would bind up the opposite side a little bit.

Finally did this today, the driver's side had both tabs broken so I did both sides with zip ties. Silly easy and works awesome!

This post amused me (see below), and I've book marked it in case I need to do it eventually.

I test drove a LC (I'm still on the hunt but planning to look at a promising one tomorrow) a few weeks back at a local Toyota dealership. First thing I noticed as we got out on the road was the horrible shaking on the DS mirror. I mentioned it to the salesman who assured me "it's just a screw that needs to be tightened, you could take care of it in no time."

Sounds like it's a known issue and now with it's own known (easy) fix.

Why is it that all the 2 minute fixes end up being a major PIA for me? I was going to fix my passenger side mirror today and when I pull off the mirror guess what hook was broken......the friggen bottom So much for the two minute fix....

I just fixed my mirrors on Saturday. Many thanks to those who have posted the how-to's--very helpful! Once I got mine out, I took a little different route. Like most people, one or two of the "hooks" had broken off. So, rather than mess with the JB weld or zipties, I simply took a paper clip, cut it into a "J" shape with wire cutters to match the angle/profile of the missing/broken piece from the plastic hook mounts. Then I just took the paper clip and held it with some needle nose pliers into the flame on our gas stove until it was glowing red, then I just pushed it into the plastic bracket where the hook was broken. The paperclip heats the plastic and goes in a good 1/8 of an inch. I just let it cool for a bit, and then tried to pull it back out with the pliers--that baby isn't going anywhere!!

I also noticed that on the driver's side mirror one of the hooks was cracked but not yet broken off. So, I fired up my $9 soldering iron, got it nice and hot, and "welded" the plastic together. Took all of 2-3 minutes and it's strong as heck!

Just found out the PO did the velcro fix who know's how long ago(tailight warranty)...

Read all the fixes, Thanks all! Very informative didn't have any epoxy or weld handy so I thought I'd give the Hot Poker paper clip method a whirl as the instant gratification was appealing...seems to be good but it is a little tricky getting the placement right since the paperclips aren't as thick as the original plastic. Great idea, Thanks NP!

I also have/had a shattered lower socket for the screw in the bottom with a missing screw...happened to find an old nutsert from some funiture parts and cut it to length with a pipe cutter and hot pokered that in there too! Seems like a good fit. Cut a machine screw to length and we're off to the races!

See how it holds up.

Glad I found this post! Just bought my rig this past weekend and had to deal with both mirrors shaking on my 180mile ride down from NJ because the "putty" that whoever put in between the mirror and the housing just wasn't cuttin it hahaha

I am going to try this, but I am wondering - IS there a more permanent fix? or perhaps we have part numbers for this? Then I am also wondering if said permanent fix is even worth it after reading all the success stories in this thread.

I'm the guy that started this thread.

I did this at least 10 years ago as a temporary fix instead of duct tape. This is permanent enough fix for me.

Did this today and went around the whole mount like ElPolloBlanco. Works great!! I have full range of motion also. Was a little tricky figuring out how to cinch the ties down but I eventually got it. It's a matter of moving the mirror all the way up or all the way down. No need to tuck either as I snipped the tie as far in as I could.

Only issue I have now is that the driver side access screw is missing Looks like the plastic chipped off a bit, and then after becoming loose, the screw probably fell out. So now I am in search of that exact screw. IF anyone can give me the part number or size that would be great. I think there is some thread left for it to hold on to so I am gonna give it a go. I think I may have a little bit of shale left in the driver side but still better than it was. IF not, then I will tear it down and try something different

Wow! What an amazing solution for so many reasons.

1) it actually took me roughly 5 minutes (most things seem to take 10x longer than advertised)
2) it totally worked
3) made super-wife happy

I did the same thing on one if my repairs. (Done 4). Search eBay for replacement glass- about $12.

Cool! Yeah, I wasn't thinking "Hey, this is glass and it could break" when I was trying to shove the zip tie behind the mirror… Boneheaded mistake on my part. It's broken, sure, but there was no shaking whatsoever on the mirror! It still gets a thumbs up from me!

That sucks! But yes, you can find a replacement easy. If not in eBay check cruiser solutions or the other 80 suppliers. Will cost more but at least you'll have glass!

Thanks for the suggestions! I picked up some glass from a part out on here (thumbs up to SuperStan26 for providing quick service) as well as the eBay replacement glass. The eBay replacement glass is applied to the existing backing plate with adhesive tape, has anyone had a bad experience with this? Just curious… Thanks again for the awesome suggestion with this repair!
