I talked to Odyssey about the difference between the automotive and marine batteries they make. The extra terminals and marine sticker are it. Both are the same starter/deep cycle battery, same deep discharge recovery ability, same specs.

So if you were holding out for the sweet blue colored DieHard Platinum marine to go on sale because you think it is more "deep cycle" than the Platinum auto, wrong... sorry. Warranty on the marine is not as good as well (3 yeas, not 4 with the prorated 100 month).

I researched a lot before purchasing, unless you want the Group 31, extra terminals, or blue plastic.... get the auto while they are on sale, same batteries - better deal, simple as that.

Unfortunately I found out that Sears and Odyssey were the same after I killed my $275 boat starter batt by leaving the switch on for 3 weeks:doh:. And had to get one ASAP in the Keys on a trip. 2 weeks later I was in a Battery+ store getting some new batteries for my 80 remote. Was talking to the guy and heinformed that Odyssey does in deed make the Sears battery. Coulda saved me a hundred bucks.

P.S. I paid online via paypal then went to Sears. I had my old Napa Gold battery with me to turn in. Nothing wrong with the Napa and it only saves you $15. So I decided to keep it. While standing there, the Sears Auto Dept. phone rings and some guy is looking for a cheap used battery for his Honda Prelude. The Sears guy tells him he's looking at a used battery, checked out, and verifies on the computer than it will fit his car. I talk to the guy and 30 minutes later I've sold my old battery for $25.

Just an amusing twist. Now I have to finish my dual battery project!!!

It seems to depend on many things. Price for one. Sometimes people score these for under $150. All the automotive and marine DHP batteries are the same technology. So, you can go with easy direct fit, reverse posts, or huge and modify the battery tray. Even the smallest, direct fit, is way better than the stock spec battery.

here's a question for you folks, can you order the terminals in reverse positions from what they have on line? i saw on their website that they have the same set up (as far as terminals go) as the optima yellow top i tried installing a while ago. the battery cables wouldn't reach the terminals. can i order these from sears with opposite polarity?
thanks

I'm not aware of any special options. Some are one way and some are the other. People have flipped them, made adjustments to where they ground the battery, etc... Whatever it takes to make one of these great batteries work in your vehicle.

I have IBS dual battery set up with the 31M MARINE (AUX) and 34 (MAIN) Die Hard Platinums and they have performed flawlessly. Even made the mistake of leaving the back door hatch open for 3 days straight with the dome lights shining on and thought for sure I would need to link the 2nd battery for start up but to my surprise the cruiser fired right up!

how often can you get them for $150?

It's not common. I only recall that happening once and I jumped on it. Below $180 is pretty good. $165 seems to occur fairly regularly. The best deals usually involve multiple discount types and you have to know what they are.
