Monday update: Talked again to current owner again today, and we reached an agreement on price. If the weather holds, I'll be dragging my utility trailer up to Montana this coming weekend to pick it up! Talked to my cousin (OP) today and if things work out, he may come with me for the pickup.

Has anybody got advice/concerns about trailering a cruiser with the soft top on? current owner has the hard panels, roof, and rear hatch, but he's not sure about any hardware. I'm a bit concerned about trying to make that install with no hardware and site unseen. Any advice appreciated!
I have the same soft top. Last year I put it on for the first time for a roadtrip down to southern Utah. So similar distance and speeds you’ll see from Reno to Montana. On the way down we had mixed weather and I’d look in the rear view mirror to see the the doors flapping around and the top ballooning out to the point I was concerned about it ripping off. The point is, I don’t think those tops were designed for modern interstate speeds. I don’t get any major damage, but the flapping doors did mess up the paint on my windshield frame. Just an FYI

Gonna' be one cold S.O.B. this weekend for that trip! Travel safe!

Hey all - thanks for following along. Quick update here. To confirm, seller is a great guy - we've talked a few times and yes, we did agree on a price. Update tonight is that I'm pushing back the pickup until next weekend - the 24th is the agreed date to be specific. I talked the the seller today, and we're both aligned on the new date. Reason for the week delay is twofold:

1) I've got commitment from my cousin (@jwheelwr the OP on this thread) that he's going to make the drive up to Montana to get it with me, but he can only go next weekend. We shared the same Grandfather who owned this very same Cruiser when we were kids in the 80s and early 90s, and we share memories of going rabbit hunting and wheeling with him. We were laughing today that we remember Grandpa taking us in winter and accidently doing a full 360 on some black ice when we were both strapped in the jump seats in the back. OP is as pumped up as I am to get this back in the family! He's in Salt Lake and I'm in Reno, so he's either going to fly to Reno next Friday to make the drive all the way with me, or meet me in Wells, NV and go the rest of the way with me.

2) I'm having some work done to my utility trailer this week to be sure I'm safe to tow it. I've having some D-rings welded on and I'm repacking the wheel bearings and adjusting the brakes before this nearly 2k mile drive. It's a tandem axle 16ft trailer - easily will handle the Cruiser, but wasn't really setup with good strap points to axle strap vehicles. This will be good to get this done right. @centerlineseal - the -15 forecast on Saturday night this weekend will be nice to avoid also!

Now that I have some help coming with me and some extra time - I'm seriously considering trying to install the hard top when we're up there. I think I'm going to have to bring all the needed hardware with me to be safe, since I doubt we'll find the hardware when we're up there. I saw a few posts above about possible bolt sizes (M6). My goal is a temporary install - safe for the trip back, but certainly will need to be taken apart for new seal and other work.

Can anybody confirm what bolt sizes I should try to get my hands on for this install, and how many? Other than the bolts and normal hand tools - anything else I need for the install?

I'll send a few pics of the trailer when ready, and you'll get to see some photos next weekend of both @jwheelwr and I going to pick up the Cruiser. I'll do my best to document this journey and get photos as we go and keep everybody up to speed. Once I get this thing back home, we can start talking about the right way to restore/resto-mod/other.

Last note for today - I talked to @orangefj45 at Valley Hybrids on Monday by phone - he's going to get me on the schedule to give this a thorough inspection and make a plan with me on the mechanical component. It will make the trip to Stockton in sometime in the next 4-8 weeks. In the meantime, I can figure you what the end goal is here.

This is very cool.
I am traveling for work so can’t confirm with certainty what the bolt size is for the top but If I had to guess it’d be M6. The door hinge hardware is bigger I think.

I would recommend getting some proper axle straps to tie the truck down with via the axles. Anchoring from the body is not recommended.

Hey Eldon, that is great news. As others have mentioned the hardtop is M6. I found these (below) in the FAQ section of the 40 series forum. Definitely worth looking through all the information to be found there.

Hardtop Bolts
M6x1.0 hardtop bolts
65SWB45

Winshield
(The ones that clamp the front lip of the hardtop to the windshield frame)
6mmx1.0x15 or 20 Exterior of windshield
Poser

The rear corner braces and the hinges for the hatch are larger. Would sure to get the corner braces in the back installed. Would also use ratchet straps over the top and down to the bottom of the tub on an unknown top. Don't want the cap coming loose from the channel come flying off heading down the highway. 8 bolts for corner braces and 6 for the hatch hinges. Believe they are 8MM, would have to check.

I bought a mostly disassembled cruiser in Arkansas and drove it back to Texas. The top cap still had the sides on it, so we put that on and I had brought a bunch of M8 and M6 bolts. I would suggest an M6x20 (Qty 20) bolt to secure the sides to the tub, the drill/tap suggestion is a good one. The top to windshield are M6x guessing 15 with fender washers and the inside is an oval countersunk head M6. That and a combination of straps made it work. I also put the cruiser on the trailer backwards since the windshield wasn't installed. That way the top didn't become a sail.
Take your time, this is a great story, savor the moment! We are all rooting for you!
My other recommendation is to go down the road 20 miles, stop and check straps for tightness and for load shift.

Love this thread and super cool story. I grew up in a 40 series my father had in the early 80s. like @cstav86 says, we are rooting for you! I may have missed it, but is the current owner on mud?

Thanks and great call out. I do have a similar set and I know how to axle strap - just never rigged this trailer up before. I'll be ready to go once I get these D-rings welded in.

I don't think the current owner is on mud. He's much more a chevy square body guy. He told me he had bought this with intention of fixing it up for his daughter one day, but hasn't had the time.

Great info all - thank you! Looks like a drill and tap set with about 40x M6x20s and a bunch of straps to get started. I'm thinking worst case, if I'm not confident it's secure, I could try the soft top and keep a close eye on it. If that looks suspect, then I could remove the soft top off, and pull'er topless - then hope it doesn't rain or snow a bunch.

For hardtop bolts, you could always get a hardtop bolt kit from one of the vendors here. I’ve only dealt with Overland Metric (he’s an active member on this forum), but he has great kits and uses quality marine grade stainless hardware.

But CCOT and Cruiser corps also have complete hardtop bolts kits.

You can definitely source all those from the hardware store for a slightly better price, but with the kits you get exactly what you need with the right amount of bolts/nut/washers and maybe even a better quality hardware then you local store. Just another option that’s out there.

My Overland Metric kit s one of these best things I’ve gotten for my 40

It's Thursday and going this weekend. Doubt you get them in time from a vendor.

Hopefully the little angle brackets that attach the door headers to the windshield are still attached to the door headers. Those require a 8MM nut and two 8MM crosshead counter sunk screws for each side.

X2 on getting quality straps to go around the axles. That's how I hauled my crawler back and had to go through some pretty windy & curvy mountain roads without a problem.

He mentioned he pushed the pickup till the next weekend now, so plenty of time to get I think.

Super cool that you were able to track it down! Give me a shout if you need a hand in Bozeman, I’ll be around all weekend and am always willing to help out with a Cruiser.
