:)Sounds like getting rid of both the early column and 3 foot steering box is the way to go. In my case I'm more interested in workability then looks.

The early column has a unique spline and is a ton of work to keep. If you are not concerned about keeping the early look, I would swap to the later column ('73 or newer). It has the advantages of; better bearings, switches, already mounts to the firewall, wider steering wheel selection, etc. Still takes some work, wiring, firewall mount, etc, but IMHO, nets a better result.

:cool: OK - I was just wondering if the boxes got smaller - the way you are doing them seems just fine.

The conversions are all a series of compromises, most require rad mount trimming, this one did. Depending on, motor, fan, etc, the rad can be moved to passenger, reducing trimming. If retaining the stock shock tower, it's hard to avoid. If going to the ford shock tower, the box can be moved rearward, and could be spaced away from the frame, avoiding the trim.

IMHO, trimming the rad frame, is simple, as long as it is properly mounted, don't foresee it ever having issues. In most cases, is the way to go, better than the other options.

The '60 boxes are all the same size. The '80 box is larger, makes more power, is a good option for larger tire/locked/etc rigs, but would be a bigger challenge to fit.

The 60 box does intrude into the radiator support a wee bit, requiring some trimming. But, additional perimeter support is added back in to more than make up for any support lost from the trimming. John

I didn't have time to go check out Nichols in Prescott today. I might some day because I'm naturally curious but I basically have decided to make the trip(s) down to Mesa to do a 60/40 steering like Scoobiedubes here . Not sure when that will be. I'll make a call to Kevin next week for more info.

First thing I have to do before any work is name "Her" - maybe #3 because she is the third FJ40 or maybe "Again" or " Finally" or something or other!! Going from "That" to something more appropriate. When I was a kid my Dad called our "new to us" 1950 Ford "Betsy" - that keeps popping into mind!

Then there is "Taxes" gotta see what that bite is. Always something.

Is she your 3rd FJ40? She'd be number 4 to recently take up temporary residence in Kevin's shop, depending on when she arrives. The naming has been ritualistically done upon arrival at the shop based on observed attributes at the time.
 
Yes - It's my 3rd. First was a near new 1976 that I traded an Old Blue Jeep Gladiator for - (I think it was a 1966 or so) in late 1977 or mid 1978. Loved that rig, drove it around, towed it around the West as I transfered from job to job. Had it just the way I liked it. Best rig I ever had. Had it at least 10 years.

I ended up in Eastern Oregon, married and in need of a gas getter for the then wife - so had to trade it for a ford escort wagon (or thought I had to trade it since we didn't have enough $ for another rig). Ended up she liked the 76 FJ40 and would of driven it no matter what the gas cost was - but didn't "convey" that to me even though she was there every step of the way. Well I guess I still blame her for not being straight and honest with me - which turned out to be a reoccurring theme in our marriage - and I blame me for ever letting the 76 go. As you can tell that's a sore spot. :crybaby:

Then way way later I picked up a 1974 FJ 40 that ran fairly well but had all the smog stuff gone and I was in Kalifornia at the time and 74 was still too young to not need to be smogged. I actually "green stickered" it - which let me run it off road but at that time not on any Forest Service road that was considered a "highway " in Kalifornia. Never had the time to really use it just Off Road (trails). Life cought up once again and I was moving and had to sell it off - I liked it well enough but wasn't as attached to it as the "76". :doh:

So here I am in Northern AZ and through a series of trades I finally got a FJ40 again ( one of those I can't afford to keep them but I'll lose $ if I sell/trade them things) so now - (being touchy feely) I kinda feel complete again:rolleyes:.

Through the long years in between I had lost track of the changes but never the "longing for" a good old FJ40! So I ended up with a 66 with a good body - overall fairly good shape, engine seems fairly stout but needs "things" to bring it up to where I want to be. The basics - good steering & good brakes. Over the last year or so I have been able to find out (quite a bit through this forum) about FJ 40's again and realized I need to find someone who will do good work on it and that I'll just need to save the coin and get it done to do the steering & brakes & at some point a 4 speed. I can still do the maintenance things. :steer:

As far as names go - if that is their ritual - cool. It will be like a stray dog with a name on their collar - use if for awhile and if it sticks OK - I'll probably still call her sweety when she is runnning good and one of those "other names" when she reaches back and bites me!!! :grinpimp:
