really? im sorta stuck on the oem-ness of canvas.....but is upkeep that difficult as far as UV protection?

The military vehicle collector crowd treat their canvas cab and cargo covers to maintain water repellancy and to preserve them.

There are commercial synthetic products. Many of them use linseed oil:

How to Waterproof Canvases With Linseed Oil

yeah - i made a concoction of beeswax, linseed and pine tar which turned out great for waterproofing canvas carharts. I think this same concoction is whats used on much of the Filson Canvas stuff.

i cant imagine doing a whole softtop- but in the sun might make it real easy to spread

my only issue with the beeswax/linseed/pine tar was that it darkened the canvas a bit more than i liked.......which probably could be lessened with less pine tar which was mainly used to offset the bad linseed odor.

Think we need the expert advice of @JohnnyC on the fabric type and upkeep, etc...

i actually spoke to @JohnnyC about his canvas and apparently the super thick military grade one he had lasted 10+years and he admittedly could have been a bit more diligent on upkeep and extended the life significantly.

I got samples of the PVC and it looks really good. I like the low maintenance, water repellance, and it isn't supposed to fade.

Mine is outside (upper north east) 24/7 and is my DD ... 10 years was really good imho ... my kayline vinyl oem top lasted about 5 ... two separate times :)

Vinyl is easy

Canvas is cool

Is it outside 24/7?

Canvas BTW seals best when it gets dust imbedded in... and will most definitely darken if done right to preserve it

Vinyl you dont have those issues ... but needs to be cleaned where as canvas you just leave alone (and just use a preservative)

Any type of rubbing/cleaning on a canvas will shorten its life

This IS also an issue with vinyl... because the threading gets worn... but... trolls pvc uses some good thread and don't really have that issue ... newer threads are so much better then 20 years ago

PVC from Trollhole?

Im still searching for a reasonably priced set of bows - so i probably have time for checking out samples.

Yes check my thread for the sample photos - last or second to last page.

Good luck on the bows. I asked someone not far from me about the sale of his oem ones and they went for $800 same day the add posted on Craigslist.

I bought a set of bows for 550 shipped on here. They needed some touch-up but for a couple hours of putting them back together I can't complain.
You have to be Johnny on the spot for good deals.

yeah that set from Wiley didnt need much and was well priced....nice grab.

What are peoples take on the RealSteel bows quality?

Id really prefer finding an oem painted white set to keep the 74 FST as original as possible.......but i fear it may take years before i come across a set. :(

The walnuts are probably from rodents. I got a huge pile of parts from a barn once and the boxes had tons of walnuts shells in them.

I have a top made from ballistic nylon that has held up well. Really no maintenance to it either. I also have a Trollhole trail cover that I just throw over it when the top is off.

I have real steel bows on my 75 fst and really like them. The quality is excellent.
I would certainly buy again if I ever needed bows

Tim, I have a perfect set of oem bows in oem blue, cherry doors, and a mint factory blue tailgate, but don't want to break up the set, and they are not cheap! Would be great for someone with a horizontal blue Fj40. IMHO nothing comes close to oem bows.

shoot me a pm on price of that blue set of fst stuff when u have some time. thanks!

started some engine pm. the plugs were almost hand loose which likely explains the oil migrating down the threads and onto the plug tips. the valve cover leaks that were basically oozing into the plug galleys was rolling down the plugs and making for some crazy looking carbonized-oil shrouds on the tips ! and explains the hard starting as 3 of the plugs were caked in oil which coincided with wet galleys from the valve cover leak-zone.
