Thanks guys. I've read a little on the Hydro assist but frankly don't know much about it. Gives me another research project I suppose.

Let me skip ahead one step assuming I resolve the death wobble with the shims.

Looking at various ways to mount the steering stabilizer, I see some mounted to the drag link and others mounted to the tie rod. Any opinions on which is better/best?

Ted i have some steel 6* shims you can have once the front axle is out of the zuk. As for hydro assist, its stupid simple, feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions.

Will

Once upon a time a crushed a set of aluminum shims and I spit out a steel shim so now the only way I install shims is to actually bolt them to the spring pack w/ the center pin.

Hydro Assist is next on my list, I may even order parts today.

Where from?

Undecided.... I am still shopping.

Likely PSC for the ram (1.5x8") and I will probably make my own hoses.

Really happy with my 1.5x8 ram from rocklogic. Looked at doing the field-serviceable hoses so I could make my own and carry spare, but it was going to be significantly more expensive than the ones that came with the kit and I already had pre-made spare lines from surplus center. The lines are so cheap from places like surplus center etc I'm not sure it's worth making your own unless you have a crimper or connections.

Ted- Like Will said, there really ain't much to it. The hardest part is rebuilding the power steering gearbox, and that wasn't hard.

For me, it made the difference between my truck being easy to drive anywhere or a death wobble nightmare I didn't like to drive.

Appreciate the feedback guys, looks like that will go on the list of mods in the near future.

The good news is that 6* seems to be the right number, caster is now about 3*. John and I threw in the shims the other night. Afterwords, I took it for a quick test drive up to almost 45 mph with no wobbles, while not fully tested I'm hoping we've resolved the problem!! Dave called me today and was near a drive-line shop so I had him swing in to see if they had some steel shims, they did. For now at least I'm putting this task in the "completed" column but the hydro merits a revisit when I get the rest of the truck dialed in.

One thing I did not count on having to do was to build a traction bar. The Ford springs are so soft I'm afraid of axle wrap so I'll be heading over to pick up some steel tube and a heim joint.

I'm thinking of building some version of this:

For the most part Phase I of this project is nearing completion as well. I have a few things to finish up such as cleaning up the brake lines and a small handful of other things. After 2 1/2 months of working on this I'm really anxious to get a shake-down run under the belt.

Assuming everything works well I'll be ready for Phase II very soon: 5.29s and lockers. I have most of the parts already assembled it's just a matter of having 1 diff setup and slapping them in. :D

Stinkin' thing has been over at John's so long the tag expired, assuming I get that resolved this coming week it'll be on the expo ride.

Note to trail leader: take it SLOW on the turns!!! :flipoff2: this aint no road machine any more that's for da** sure!

It's been a couple of weeks since I've given this more than a token update so I figured it was time.

Replace the 6* alum shims with 6* steel---DONE
Steering Stabilizer installed---DONE
Emissions and Tags---DONE

For the most part the wobble is gone but not entirely. From here it's an alignment and tire issue to iron out the shimmies, i hope.

I finally drove it home from John's this past weekend and that turned out to be one he!! of an experience! The body role was horrendous and even a little scary. It's definitely a far cry from the old IFS days of stiff steering and good reaction times. Not quite sure how to describe it but let's just to say I had to more "guide" it home that drive it.

After thinking about if for a day or so (which is a long time for me) I realized that we never re-wrapped/re-clamped the leaf spring packs. These clamps (for lack of a better description) prevent the springs from opening freely during articulation instead of sliding across each other like they should.

So last night I ran up to HD and grabbed some (more) 1/2" by 1/8 flat steel stock and commenced to wrapping the leaf packs and then welded the ends shut. I put 2 on the each of the rears and 1 on the fonts. I took it for a test drive earlier this evening and it's MUCH better, still no Formula 1 car but at least not scary any more.

Up next, 5.29s :clap::clap:

fixed this problem today, now solid as a rock :D:D

I saw Ted's truck for the first time since the transformation yesterday afternoon and it is amazing!

Now he just needs someone that would know how to drive it...:flipoff2:

(Ted can't reach the door handle anymore...:bang:)

Come on Ted show everyone a pic of the new rubber.

Not yet, you wanna see the (almost) finished product you gotta see it in person this weekend.:clap::clap::clap:

Here's a little teaser though, got them off CL for a decent price. They had never touched the ground up until I got 'em.

Size? I see that they are Goodyear MTR?

Sid

yeah. The guy I got them from said he owned a Toyota shop in Carrollton, he certainly knew his stuff from talking with him. Anyway, claimed to have bought them for "mock up" project that took a turn to 39s so he never mounted these and I'll confirm they didn't look like they'd ever touched the ground.

Not big enough if they fit in the back of his trail truck.

It's a big trail truck :flipoff2:

So what size are the tires you bought?
