Does this help MapQuest Maps - Driving Directions - Map

I just ran Box Canyon today up to the Martinez Cabin. No lockers required/used, but a little extra clearance is handy in a few places. The generator is no longer blocking the entry to the riparian area leading into the cabin. Ran into several groups of Snow Birds on Rental Quads, so watch out for the traffic. John

Phil is driving the 100, what kind of tires, battery, air compressor and lift is he running? Or do I post this in another thread, Jackson where is the options site?

Inkpot,
Thanks for the update. Do you think a stock 80 or 100 can make the trip?
Cook.

Rudster,
I’ll own this. At last Friday’s gathering of the clan I made the suggestion that a trail run should be scheduled every fourth Saturday of the month intending plenty of time to prepare. I also thought one of the more experienced would lead these outings. But, I was called out and told to make my idea work…and here we are. I’m not the best driver, I’ve never been to the places I intend to lead the people who follow me, and I’m a lousy mechanic – but I’m interested.
Back to the planning….
Cook.

Phil,
The map looks good, thanks. How accurate do you think the time and mileage estimates of 1 ½ hours and 28 miles? If accurate, this could make a nice half day trip. Those with an interest in a longer run could split off and head up to Martinez Cabin.
Thanks,
Pete

I don't think there's any reason you need to 'lead' the runs, that's usually left to whomever has experience on that particular trail. Setting up the runs will be great, I for one am looking forward to some runs I can plan for. Don't take that as a commitment by me, I probably won't make many in the near future, but the effort is appreciated.

Hard for me to make a call on that. I have never wheeled a stock 80. With my lift and tires, the only place I touched any rocks was in the top part of Martinez. I would guess that with a bit of spotting and maybe a stacked rock or two, a stocker would clear the few really tall rocks in Box Canyon. John

FWIW - I have done box canyon with a 100% stock 100 series. Personally I would not take a stock 80 or 100 series with a rookie driver to Martinez Cabins. JMO - YMMV;p

If you knew where you were going, how to drive, did not stop, not slowed done by traffic, did not hit an ATV, experienced no problems and did not get out of your vehicle. Maybe but not likely This is a CSC trip, right:rolleyes:...

I would say mileage is close:flipoff2:

1.5 hours ? running Box Canyon for time ?

Stock rigs are likely to struggle at the step. Last time we were there, it had a lot of loose rock. With stock rigs, I would run it downhill, north to south, or if you want to start from the south, bypass it by doing the up and over road and exit Sandman (a great drive).

It's been 3 years since I've been through it, but here's my friend's stock 100 going up the step S to N. No damage, but it might be worse now? Probably helped that it was wet, not dusty.

Another option would be to go in on Box Canyon, but stay in Box up thru the upper section. That can exit out onto the trail that parallels Ajax to the south from the 5 way intersectrion. When I ran that last spring, it was easier than the main section of Box Canyon. John

I'd suppose going up and hugging the wall on the driver's side ought to work, nice and slow, and maybe put a few strategically placed helper rocks so as to not lean the truck too much into the wall?

But I haven't seen a stock 80/100 on a trail. I've been out with front/rear locked trucks on 33s/35s/37s for so long and so many times, it changes the perspective. I find it difficult to make recommendations.

Well there was that stock Range Rover that had a tire issue in our run last month, that should give us some perspective.

I climbed the step in the dark, in a stock 4runner years ago.:meh: A stock 80 or 100 is far more capable. It might take a bit of work, but it's doable.
