Rubithon Breakage

Not having run the Con but having sway bar issues here is my assessment.

The brackets on the front axle are just to flimsy and when you flex the axle to it's limits they let go.

Are they the "fuse" as far as the swaybar goes? If those are made to be stronger, what's the next thing that breaks? The bar itself, maybe?

Admittedly from this conversation, not a very well placed fuse since they potentially take out brake lines, but if they protect the next thing down the line, and that thing is more expensive, maybe better off letting them break.

As for more pics of damage, these are 100 series taken some time ago on the Rubicon, but plastic can go both ways - yank it off or offer a little protection. :D

There is no way an 80 or 100 wagon will come through that trail clean. No way.

I disagree with you my friend

Had a taken my swaybars off or had beefer links I wouldn't have broken them. And except for that one spot I was clean. Uncle Ben refused the spot given to him at that point and came out without hitting choosing his own line.

It's not easy or even likely, but I think its doable.

I think what you meant to say is

No way I can drive my Green 80 on that trail and have it come out clean. No way

When Dan takes his truck on local trails (which is rarely), he sends Sara out front with a chain saw and makes her cut a swath big enough to drive a school bus through. I have no idea why because a few scratches would give that ugly green truck a little character... but he is stubborn that way.

(waiting now for the thinly veiled threat to put some bad voodoo on my head gasket... bring it on old man, bring it on.)

Now THAT's funny!

I've read this entire thread and I can't believe that we've gone on for so many pages talking about sway bars.

Take em off, wheel it; leave them on, wheel it;

Just do it--whatever "it" might be.

I've decided to run the Rubithon next year. It's worth the trip....especially if Dan says "I'm never going on that trail again!"

:flipoff2:

Im thinking Dan is having some post passenger stress/trauma disorder, maybe he needs to hit Dusey Ersham Trail next..........

are you sure Dan...the green 80 in your same wagon run on the con came through without a scratch, he also had no flares : )

for me getting a damage free run is part of the fun of wheeling a "street 80" through the Rubicon.

anybody can get through with damage and your lucky to get through with just body damage, breaking drive train and rolling now thats damage...ask Bill.

I stand by my assertion.

Every 80 I saw took hits. I am not saying don't do the trail. I'm saying that you WILL beat your truck up. I do not regret doing it. I do not want to do it again as an owner/driver/mechanic. I would go again as an unencumbered observer.

One of us wrapped his truck in Saran Wrap to keep it from being scratched on a tight trail.

It was NOT me.

Oh, snap.

Myabe it's just me, but having done the Rubicon several times (in my 40 not my 80) and having been around the rock on Cadillac each time with wagons in our group, it sure made things easier with a couple of rock in that low spot. Kept the truck from pitching so hard into the rock and kept the body away much better than what appears in these photos.

Sorry, I know this is a bit of Monday morning quarterbacking and what's done is done, but for the future it's worth a shot.

I'm with Romer, the Rubicon can be run cleanly in an 80. I plan on running it again in my 80 since I've only been able to drive it in a 40. We had an 80 in our group that made the trail cleanly including cadillac hill. Well it would have been cleanly had he not decided to go down the Old Sluice.:hillbilly:

Sorry no pics of the exact spot you've mentioned.

coming down the Old Sluice.

Only damage of the trip, all of which happened in the Old Sluice

It was a bitchen trip and I beleive the first thing everyone told us was expect body damage ! No body wants it but we are ready to except it or we would not be on the trail. I thought the spotters did a great job, thats alot of work getting ahead of everyone and I did not see a tip jar on the trail. LOL Also I heard they are always looking for help I am sure if anyone wanted to be a spotter next year they would welcome you. Have a Great Week
