Great photos KC - fun to have you on this trip... That last photo of Sammy at Observation point really says it all...

Thanks also to Ken Hanna for perfect body armor ;)

Wow, what an adventure, my first trip on the Rubicon! It was everything I've heard about and more!

I'll never be able to repay Pasquale for that great opportunity, to tag along and meet so many fun folks and to see so many amazing Cruisers. Thanks to everyone on the Wagon run for making me feel so welcome and letting me & my camera constantly get in the way. Andrew led a great run, Tom & Eric were tremendous spotters, Greg, Eli, Eric, Sam, Fred & Jeff made the whole week fun and Don made it look so easy...

I'll post a few pics to start and here's a link to a SmugMug album that I've started and I'll be adding to today & tomorrow. With over 1200+ pics, it's going to take awhile... But here is what I saw and how I saw it, on my first Rubicon trip and my first TLCA event. I was blown away.

And one quick question now that I'm home... Why does my 60 on 33's all of the sudden look so small?

what Scott said

When I got home and started talking about my week...I found myself only talkin about the trail repairs/recoveries (D44 steering arm, fj40 pinion and fjc tcase).

Now that I've uploaded my pics, you can see it was MUCH MORE then that.
Thanks Tony and all who participated in making another Rubithon to Remember

Also wanted to thank my extended family - Thursday Breakfast Run

You are absolutely right Manny. Even though I am still stuck out there it was a fantistic trip and enjoyed everyones company on our run.
Your pics are great thanks!

What happened in that last picture? I was not aware that Ross broke his front end as well and would appreciate knowing the details-it looks like he is running 1 ton ends. Did one of those break?.

What a string of luck, it reminds me of a country song......

Yes, one ton TRE

Jam nut was loose. Constant back and forth and the threads pulled out. Welded the end back in, using the jam nut to tie rod.

Yes, Thanks to all who helped put on this great event. It was awesome. Eric and I chatted on our way home and all he kept talking about was plans for next year. I have a feeling he's in for sure. I don't know what I'll do for my big trip next year.

I don't think anybody had more fun than Gabe. He was non-stop smiles for 4 days straight, right up until he'd pass out every night. Even with all his bumps and bruises he kept going and going. I could say the same about Pasquale in his 80. He took some hard knocks on this trip but just kept smiling and plugging along at the trail.

As always the wagon run guys were top notch. Even though we were wheeling 40s this go around everyone made us feel welcome. We were such a diverse group yet we gelled immediately. And I appreciate that everyone treated Gabe so well. He loves you guys and kept telling Ginger about all of you. My only regret is that my lack of appreciation for the finer foods in life doesn't add to the mix.

Pighead, I really thought your rig and Sam's 80 made for an interesting order of things. The two flat black big beasts in a row gave me so many memories. First of the 55 I learned to drive in and second of the 80s I spent a good portion of my wheeling career in.

I 100% agree that the snow on the road out from Observation Point made the trail so much better. Instead of being a boring bouncing ride out to the highway it was an adventure. Mudrak is Gabe's hero, not only does he build awesome fires after dropping big trees to the ground, but he sloshes through the snow and mud like it is nothing.

I'm hoping to make in next year in my own truck this time.

Thanks again!

Eric V.

Quick Trip report --- And let me just say, here and now, BK is my hero. Mudrak, Pismo Jim and many others had a hand, but I think you'll see I owe it all to BK

I broke 8 times (or had 8 repairs?).

Monday it took 10 hours to make it in from staging to the springs. We shovelled for hours and hours. 6 ft high drifts. Deep water crossings.

I broke a power steering mount, Gary welded it. Broke the bolt, BK had one. Backed into a tree after slipping into a tree well, broke my roof top tent.

Tuesday as we were leaving the springs I pulled my tie rod end out. BK welded it. We had to winch several times going up big sluice. Massive bolder / rock movements from the winter. As I was climbing the top corner, we discovered that my carb breather tube was actually preventing it from breathing. Jeff had some tubing, so we fixed that.

Wednesday Jim and I had lunch at little sluice while Gary and Jeff went out to get the run people. BK and Gary decided that this might be the last year that Little Sluice is still tough, so they decided to run it. Mudrak made it all the way, with the only damage being his driver slider (you'd bend too with 6000+ resting on you).

Gary made it the whole way. BK flopped on the way in, rear tire blew a bead.

Lots of snow still on million dollar hill.

As we were going though the water near the top of old sluice, lost my front diff plug. Fixed that, drove about 10 feet, broke my rear pinion climbing a step.

BK called home to get a hold of the Knorr brothers, who had a diff with them. They hauled it in the next day.

Thursday, BK and I replaced the diff. While he was trying to tighten / stake the pinion nut, he asked someone to press the brakes. No rear brakes! BK had a new master cylinder, so I replaced that.

As BK was installing the rear driveshaft, he noticed that the xfer case moved. Found 3 transmission to bell housing bolts loose. 1 missing. BK had a bolt. BK also found 2 engine to motor mount bolts loose.

Started going again. BK blew another bead on the slabs. Ran the rest of the way into the springs.

On sunday I discover that my distributor cap wasn't clipped on. Fixed that. Ran great.

Needed tugs/winching up Caddy, since I was open in the rear. Crag Park helped there. After we left observation, I sheared the studs on the driver rear, and screwed up the rim lug holes. Jim had a set of new studs, still in the Toyota package. BK had som lug nuts. As we repaired the axle, found out that the c-clip fell out, because we didn't install the center block.

Fixed all of that, got to staging, tightened the lugs again. Drove to Tahoe City, wheel was loose again. Decided at that point it was time to exercise my AAA Platinum tow service (200 miles).

Got home about 9 PM.

Blame it all on the Hendog, he packed way to much chit.
Wow Ross, you even called it at raffle when they gave you the big ouch award and you said, " the trip aint over yet", little did you know.
Props for taking it all in stride and not getting buzz kill on the whole week, actually Ross I thought you were in better spirits than in previous years.
Gary collected damage to his pass. side battery box as well, and the running board on driver is toast.
First time for me to cut fire wood with a mini 14.:eek:
Lots of bear sightings this year.

Damn and I thought my ride was rough... CDan took my call yesterday

While at Gary's Campfire you rolled in... the 8' campfire light was perfect to see under your 40 -- as you were parking we notice the transfer case skid was still loose - :hhmm:

in spite of all that action you always had a contagious big smile

Ross-Thanks for the detailed post. Awesome carnage that just kept coming! Any idea what caused all the loose bolts underneath?

Now I have to add a brake master to my spares!

Piss poor maintenance by the POS Owner? ;)

I've been breaking motor mounts int he front for a while now. It appears that the frame has been cracked for a while behind the passenger front spring hanger.

It could be that the skid plate was too close to the xfer case, causing the "bangs" to be transferred directly to the xfer case, causing the bolts to loosen. That's the best I can figure. When I got the Orion, I kept the stock skid, but tried to space it away from the frame.

I just need to pony up for a good skid fab job.
