They lipped the opening for the shock towers:

I’ve been wanting to roll the lip on my fender where it is cut for the shock towers and 60 box as well-great detail!

Those little details add up, don't they?

They put a nice lip on the modified wheel openings on the tub after opening them up for the extended wheel base.

They still had the cut from the old tub for a template:

Good morning 40 fans!

Going through my pictures, there were a few things going on at the same time on the 40.

I found a nice passenger side door to replace the bucket o' bondo that was on the 40 when I bought her:

After blasting the pristine paint off, this door looks really clean - the 3 dents are odd:

You can see a little bit of pitting above, and they did a little straightening along the bottom rear of the door. Much nicer than what I had on there!

I think FJ40's have one of the highest rates of repaints out of any vehicles I know.

My parents were guilty of that  In like 1979/1980 we had an FJ40 that was dune beige or some similar color. They didn't like that color so they painted it some sort of light blue/baby blue something like that :slap:

That is funny you say that! I almost made a comment about the new ambi doors being Mustard originally.

I really liked that my 40 was sporting original paint. Obviously I rode that paint out to the bitter end - it owed me nothing! And cool to go back the original colors...

We started thinking about painting the top and whether it was worth it to take the top apart - unbolt the side panels from the fiberglass cap.
There is the gasket that goes between the side panels and fiberglass cap, and I am not sure about the best source for this?
In this SOR diagram I am talking about #5:
OEM price is $339 - I am surprised to see that.
Does anyone know if this is still available from Toyota?
Is the price actually over $300?
Would I be able to re-use my existing gasket?
Thanks. Any links to good hardtop rebuild threads are appreciated.

Back in April of '13 I raised the question of whether or not to disassemble the hard top for paint.
Ultimately we knew this was the way to go, it just seemed like more work, more time, mo' money...
But we did it!
I noticed in my 1st of the hood pics I posted yesterday that you can see the side panels from the hard top in the background:

The painters had noted a few areas that needed straightening while the hard top was on the 40:

You can see in the above pic the roof cap is now off:

I got a late start this morning, so that's all the time we have today kids!
Tune in next time for more adventures with the hardtop.

Happy Monday everyone!

IIRC, the painters decided it would be easiest to manage the hardtop in pieces, since we were going to separate the cap from the sides anyway. When you take the hardtop apart, two people can manage it pretty easily.

The guys fixed the holes in the top once the fiberglass roof cap was separated from the side panels. The PO had installed a caution/safety light for use when plowing snow - nifty!

I could not wait to pull the old headliner off. The headliner had been separating from the roof cap for years. One year I tied to re-attach the headliner with some 3M adhesive when I pulled the hardtop, but the fix didn't last long. The foam backing was just physically disintegrating...
