Paint and bodywork is so $$$ when done right.

So true!

Another thing I noticed is once you have that nice, new paint, then other things on your rig that used to look fine now look a little worn.

So, new stuff:

This part was scary - before they painted the roof cap, it was time to drill the holes for the new 3rd brake light.

They did not drill the opening for the wires, as I wasn't sure what connectors I would use. This is why the light still isn't permanently installed. I am not great at electrical, and I am nervous to drill another hole in my roof cap!

Looks fantastic! If I missed it sorry, but why the third brake light? Why there? I have seen some use a front hubcap on the spare, and then pop in a brake light in the opening of the spare tire hubcap. Just curious, the purist in me is wondering!

Paint looks great!

No worries Dallas!

I was saying that back when I was debating about taking the hard top apart @Chamba weighed in with some helpful advice. I noticed they were based in NM and AU, and went to CU, so I thought that was cool, then I saw they had an Australian LX (40). Then I saw a rather perfect looking 3rd brake light on the LX and asked about it. @Chamba said it came from a 70 series, so I thought that was cool.

It fits the 40 roof cap rather perfectly!

Happy Friday my Peeps!

I would say there were fewer surprises that had to be overcome when restoring the 40 vs. when we were repainting the Pig.

Maybe the Pig taught me things for the 40 project?

One hiccup was when I tried to get new fasteners for the hood hinge. According to the parts counter I used at the time, the Toyota parts system called for a pan head machine screw, vs. the countersunk (oval undercut) fastener that was on the 40 when we took everything apart.

We were also able to score fasteners for the windshield frame!

I was amazed that the body and paint guys were able to take all the old ones off without any breakage - impressive.

It felt really good to see the 40 coming back together - yay!

Sorry for the blurry photos.

And the hard top!

They painted the roof cap with its own color.

The 40 and the roof cap had to move down to their storage building while they worked on their "main" projects (classic Chevies).

I was glad the 40 could be isolated while they were welding and grinding on other projects.

Top looks really nice - I could hardly believe it!

Here you can see the holes we drilled for the 3rd brake light:

It was time to put the headliner in the roof cap before we reassemble the hard top!

First, I wanted to take a look at the front of the roof cap:

I remember snow (only dry, fine snow) used to come in the 40 when I was driving, so we took a look at where the roof cap joins the windshield frame:

It didn't look like there was much to block a small air flow between the metal piece and the fiberglass roof cap.
Problem solved!

I thought I could do the headliner myself.

I would say it probably would have come out better if a professional did it, but these guys were kind of out in the middle of nowhere. I didn't know of any pros that would come out there, and I didn't have the capability to bring the roof cap into town to a shop.

So I thought with the ability to lay the roof cap flat I could handle it!

Step 1, make sure to lay the headliner flat for several days to let the wrinkles settle out. When they ship the headliners, they roll them up into a bag, so wrinkles...

The instructions that came with the headliner referenced a center seam that had to be placed in the correct location:

Backside of seam, I wanted to get everything laid nice and flat:

Let's get started!
